The physical execution rate of the project in Zamengue on the outskirt of Yaounde now stands at 36 per cent.
Work for the construction of the state-owned Zamengoe Data Center on the outskirt of Yaounde is steadily advancing, the Director General of Cameroon Telecommunications (Camtel), David Nkoto Emane has observed.
The head of the corporation and his close collaborators paid a visit to the project site on Wednesday July 11. The data center is a component of the country’s National Broadband Network II Programme.
According to Masso Ntonga Jean-Michee, Engineering Unit Head of Department of Planning and Projects at Camtel, the data center project entails two phases; physical construction of the structure and technical installation of machines.
As at the time they were visiting, he said the physical execution rate of the project stood at 36 per cent. The subsequent field visit was scheduled for next month.
China Shenyang International Cooperation Co. Limited is the enterprise constructing the data center, with Huawei Technologies Cameroon Limited as entrepreneur. Engineers of the construction company suggested that work to put up the structure on a 1,989m2 surface area to host the data center will be completed by October this year.
Once completed, Masso said the data center will be used to transmit and store huge amounts of data. He disclosed the facility will be connected to two optic fibre lines – one from Nkometou and the other from Nkolbison.
“The data center is expected to start functioning next year. It will function at 2,000 terabits per second, with the possibility of being upgraded as the need arises,” the Engineering Unit Head of Department of Planning and Projects at Camtel said, indicating that the project makes use of the latest ultra-modern technology.
The data center once functional, will benefit public administrations, operators of electronic communications networks, local and international organisations, internet service providers, educational and research institutions and other users of electronic communications services and networks.
