She was the most photographed woman of her generation.
Which makes the emergence of an as yet unseen picture of a teenage Lady Diana Spencer particularly intriguing.
The mystery deepens, however, when it is revealed that efforts were made to ensure that the black and white photograph, taken on a skiing holiday before she met Prince Charles, never saw the light of day.

The picture is believed to have been taken on a Swiss ski holiday around 1979 or 1980 when Diana would have been aged 18 or 19.
It shows her lying on a bed in a chalet with a male friend, who is resting his book on her shoulder. On the window ledge behind them is a bottle of Johnnie Walker whisky.
The identity of the photographer is not known but the picture was sold to the Daily Mirror on February 26, 1981 – two days after Diana’s engagement to the Prince of Wales was announced.

It seems, however, that the picture editor of the day had second thoughts about publishing an image of the future Queen in an intimate pose with another man and scrawled across it: NOT TO BE PUBLISHED.
The picture remained in the paper’s archives until it was bought seven years ago by the private Caren Archive, which is now putting it up for sale through RR Auctions in New Hampshire.
The 8x10 inch photograph would normally sell for around £750, but because it has the ‘not for publication’ note on the top, the auctioneers expect it to fetch significantly more.
Amusingly, given the innocuous nature of the photograph, it is being marketed as a ‘salacious teenage image of the future princess’.
Eric Caren, owner of the Caren Archive, which is the largest privately owned printed newspaper collection in the US, said he acquired the photograph simply by chance after asking the Mirror group if they would be interested in selling some of their archives.
Mr Caren said: ‘It’s an intimate photo - I don’t know the man in the picture and he could be a friend or a boyfriend.'
Sources suggested the man could be Rory Scott, an early suitor of Diana’s.
Mr Caren added: ‘This would certainly not be the way the Royal Family would have wanted Diana to be presented at that moment, given that two days before her engagement had been announced.
'The fairytale between her and Charles was still intact at that point.
‘My guess is that it was a privately taken photograph that the Mirror purchased but for some reason did not publish. Why the heck not I don’t know - I don’t know if it was pressure from the Royal family or an internal decision’.
Bobby Livingstone, vice president of marketing at RR Auctions, said: ‘It captures the moment when the engagement had been announced two days before and the press were going mad over Diana - but the Daily Mirror just weren’t going to publish this photograph of her in a comfortable position with a man other than Prince Charles.'
Diana met her future husband in the summer of 1980 and married him the following year.
One of the late princess’s closest male friends at the time, James Colthurst, once recalled going with her on a ski-ing holiday around the time in question.
He said: ‘She slept on the sofa bed. It was fun. There were lots of pranks - Diana was great company - lovely, outgoing and frivolous and she enjoyed practical jokes.’
Bidding will take place over the internet between January 17 and 24.
The countryside is ‘as precious as any ancient cathedral’ and must be given the same reverence, Prince Charles insisted yesterday.
He warned rural areas were under threat from ‘insensitive development’, diseases such as ash dieback and climate change.
Speaking at the Oxford Farming Conference, the prince said it could be saved only by supporting farmers and rural communities who maintain the land.
Charles, a long-standing environmental campaigner, also declared that farmers should work with nature not against it, and that the public needed to value food more.

The millionaire publicist tried to impress the girl, 17, with his exploits
before groping her body and attempting to force her perform a sex act on him
in his office, the jury heard.
He also told the youngster to pleasure him under a restaurant table while his
WIFE was present, jurors heard.
Now in her late 40s, the woman told how she arrived in London to seek her
fortune three decades ago.
She had never heard of Clifford but felt obliged to take up a friend’s offer
to meet him, the hearing was told.
“He took me through various stories, he told me how important he was to the
press, how he gave the press stories, how important he was to people’s
careers,” she told Southwark Crown Court.
“He got people publicity and made them famous. That’s when he pointed out he
had sex with Diana Ross.
“It was very much how he was responsible for people’s careers, how much people
would pay to be represented by him, how powerful be was.
“For me, Diana Ross was a very beautiful, famous woman and I couldn’t imagine
for a moment why she would sleep with him.”
Clifford insisted she was “lucky” for him to represent her and how people
would pay up to £2,000 for his services.
But the woman told how she had no interest in appearing on television or in
the press. “I had come to London to be a fashion model,” she said.
“Even though there wasn’t a celebrity culture, the thought of being a
‘somebody’, I was thinking this is not what I want at all.”
The “poverty-stricken model” told how she attended the meeting wearing a
“horrible cheap black dress from Topshop”, a pair of tights strewn with
holes, a “horrible turquoise, grey and pink thermal vest and grotty
knickers”.
She didn’t think she would be asked to remove any clothes so was taken aback
when Clifford said “I need to see your body”, jurors heard.
When she removed her dress, Clifford allegedly remarked: “Oh my god, what a
turn on, oh my god, I’m so turned on, oh my god.”
Unlike his other alleged victims, the woman claimed Clifford was “very well
endowed” and described his manhood as “very large”.
He is accused of molesting seven teenage girls over two decades.
Clifford, 70, of Hersham, Surrey, denies 11 counts of indecent assault.
