Shah Rukh Khan is one of the most hardworking actors in the industry and yes he worked his way up and succeeded as an actor. However, he too has given big craps in his career. Dewaana is SRK's first film as an actor and during that time, he wasn't as good as he is now. For me, he started acting better from Baazigar(one of his best films).

Deewana is actually quite mediocre even for being an SRK film. The first half of the film is based on the love story of Divya Bharti and his love Rishi Kapoor, all was going well between them. There are some extremely boring sequences in the first half of the film and the songs are like tests conducted to see how long you can tolerate the film. The film actually picks up when SRK enters the frame and fights for the rights of a widow getting married again, he shows the guts to go against his father. Yes, Rishi Kapoor dies because of his evil uncle and cousin. SRK falls for Divya and after much reluctance Divya falls for SRK too. There is so drag again but then the film picks up with the twist. Rishi Kapoor is not dead, he survived the fall from the mountains. Now the villains try to kill the heroes and the heroine in a typical climax action sequence. All that happens is that Rishi Kapoor actually dies and SRK and Divya reunite as a couple.

Direction by Raj Kanwar is average, he has given better films after this in the 90s period. He handles some scenes properly, the twist is well executed but most of the film is typical and the handling is mediocre. However, hats of to Raj Kanwar for giving SRK the start his career needed, for the early 90s this is not a bad film. However, it isn't great or any kind of masterpiece either.

Shah Rukh Khan does a good job, he gets a good debut and he did win the award for the best debut that year. His portions are the best in the film, he gives the film the life it needed as the film was lifeless in the first half. Rishi Kapoor is not only chubby but acts like he is bored, although he leaves a mark in the serious scenes where he argues and fights against his cousins. His dancing is better than SUNNY DEOL'S but it isn't anything great. Divya Bharti looks gorgeous and acts brilliantly, she portrays emotions properly, she doesn't overact its such a sad thing that this talented actress is no longer alive. The rest provide the support the film needs, the villains are typecast.

Action is fairly OK and it is mainly in the second half of the film where the action happens. Music is good, Aisi Deewangee and Koi Na Koi are good songs.

On the whole, Deewana is average at its best as it does contain a tiresome and boring first half.
I did not really want to watch this one. It seemed to be an old Raj Kanwar movie which disgusted me even before I started watching it because I don't consider him even close to being mediocre as a filmmaker. The only reason I took this one is obviously the Shahrukh Khan appearance in the film. I had not even known what the film was all about because I was sure it would be just an ordinary fairy tale. So I just imagined a love story between Shahrukh Khan and Divya Bharti with a substantial supporting role by Rishi Kapoor who I thought would be playing her father or uncle. And to my complete shock, Rishi Kapoor is actually the hero! He is the one who romances the young Divya! I was saddened to find out that Shahrukh had a small part of no substance and that too, only in the second part of this idiotic film.

Just let me repeat the question: why would a 17 year-old lovely Divya have fallen for a 40-plus long haired, chubby, swollen piglet like Rishi Kapoor? Rishi Kapoor should be ashamed of taking this part; the only thing he did is ridiculing himself. He romanced a girl who could logically be younger than his own daughter and to make things worse -- acts like a teenager at his forties. On top of that, just to make himself more pathetic, he plays a pop-star...

To make things clear, I have no problems with actors romancing ladies much younger than they themselves are as long as they make a convincing couple. In fact, leading actors have always been cast opposite young girls (Amitabh Bachchan-Sridevi, Mithun Chakraborty-Madhuri Dixit, Shahrukh Khan-Deepika, Salman Khan-Sneha Ullal) and made the pairing pretty well. Also, I have nothing against Rishi Kapoor, I think he is a good actor, and his act in Bobby is still well-engraved in my heart, but it's not that he looks in this film like, say, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan or Aamir Khan look today. He looks like Divya's father.

That was such a disappointment. Oh, and as for the reason every person actually watched this film, Shahrukh Khan made a good debut. He excelled in the very little his part allowed him to do. The late Divya Bharti made a promising debut as well. If you want to watch this film, go for the second half only. Personally, I would not do even that.
