Libby Day was only eight years old when her family was brutally murdered in their rural Kansas farmhouse. Almost thirty years later, she reluctantly agrees to revisit the crime and uncovers the wrenching truths that led up to that tragic night.
As the sole survivor of the Kinnakee massacre back in 1985 which cost her entire family, Libby Day convinced that her brother Ben dabbles with the occult, names him as the deranged killer, sending him, consequently, in prison. Eventually, almost thirty years after the ghastly incident, Libby embittered and nearly broke, she will inevitably accept the offer of Lyle Wirth, a "True Crime Club" member, to share her side of the story at their annual meeting. However, Libby by digging deep into her traumatic past, she will begin to doubt her brother's guilt, furthermore, not only will she realise that the real murderer may still be on the loose but also that even though there can be more than one sides to a story, the truth has only one.
'Gone Girl' it is NOT but it is equally disturbing as it is dark. This horrific tale of a three-decade-old mass murder features normally terrific actors in ultra irritating roles. The worst offender is the film's leading lady (who also doubles as one of its producers) Charlize Theron, she was so over-the-top in this it hard to even get on-board with her shenanigans and she was followed closely by Chloe Grace Moretz in a supporting role. The only character worth sticking around for was the mysterious sleuth played by Nicholas Hoult. I also liked Christina Hendricks in this (she played the mother of Theron's character in flashbacks) but her role was so small that if you blinked twice or thrice you'd miss her appearance in its entirety.
"Dark Places" is an American movie from last year directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner and he is also the one who adapted Gillian Flynn's ("Gone Girl") novel for the big screen. In the title I wrote that I liked it for the actors, but that does not apply to Charlize Theron who rarely impressed me and certainly didn't do so here. I am talking about Christina Hendricks, who was refreshingly different from "Mad Men" where she is good as well, and Chloë Grace Moretz. I also found Corey Stoll okay, but overall I definitely preferred the flashback plot, which was roughly half the film luckily. If it had been just 2 or 3 scenes, then my rating would have been two stars lower. But still, there are a couple other flaws apart from Theron's lackluster performance. I was not too fond of the script. The part about man innocently being jailed for years and the whole story about these people randomly trying to get him free was a bit unrealistic. Same goes for the exact circumstances of the killing as we find out in the end. Nonetheless, the film is atmospheric enough and has enough tension from start to finish in several scenes to give a positive verdict overall. Still I believe, this could have been an even greater watch with a slightly improved screenplay and a bit more focus (maybe 15 minutes shorter). Overall, I recommend watching it. It is not as bad as critics say. The IMDb rating is fairly accurate I guess.
As heroines go, it’s refreshing to get one as complex as this: When psychologically scarred female characters do turn up in thrillers, they’re usually little more than shivering victims who set a group of male cops in motion, but here, Libby does her own detective work, while Hendricks lends star power to the flashback scenes.
In the book it explains that Patty Day had hired the hitman to kill her, she didn't specify how she wanted to die just that it would be quick- and on the agreement that no one would see. So in the book there's a knock on the door extremely late at night, she goes to answer it and the guy goes to stab her in the heart but he misses, ends up stabbing her a second time and then one of her kids see's so he kills her as well (Debby i think?). But obviously as far as Patty knows Libby will come to no harm as she leaves her in that room away from the killer and has arranged for her sister to come by very early the next morning to find her body. a5c7b9f00b
