This novel came very close to not getting the forth star. Its a good idea and has some good action. Unfortunately it bogs down badly for about a third of the book. Id say it comes in on the lower edge of the four star rating (again we cant give 3.5 so I have to compromise. Just life.)I put this on my Science Fiction shelf, yet I know some will probably take certain umbrage at that. Maybe I should establish a pulp science fiction shelf???? Oh well, its popular science fiction for you who have a tighter definition of science fiction...thats fine, I dont.The book opens well, its not what Id call inspired but its good and solid if a bit standard. Youll have seen some of the plot points before and the main character wont be a stranger but still as Ive noted before, there probably isnt any such thing as a completely original story.The book introduces us to Khadaji...yes in the future the people of the galaxy will apparently adopt the habit of the inhabitants of many fantasy woulds and begin using long mostly unpronounceable names full of consonants. He is running a bar called the Jade Flower when we meet him...well actually we meet him in the midst of a violent confrontation but very soon hes back to his day job, that of running the bar. Anyway at the Jade Flower Khadaji sells many varieties of intoxicating beverages and recreational pharmaceuticals. We follow our hero through a good action packed opening adventure (which I wont detail lest I ruin it for you) we then join him in a meditative state as he...thinks back, as he remembers.Then the book drops back and the next third or so is a flash back. It tells us who Khadaji was and leads us through how he became what he is.Its okay and its a good idea. Sadly, for me anyway there are a couple of sections where I was going...right, got it, move on. Still some of you may enjoy all this section more than I did. (view spoiler)[ Khadaji is in the Confeds military until hes involved in the slaughter of a huge number of rebels. He has a sort of religious experience and then meets someone who will train him up as a sort of Buddhist/Hindu/Shaolin warrior monk. Think of it as a sci/fi eastern type religion. Of course in the course of his learning he has a very unmonk-like period when he meets a female of a race called exotics...really unmonk-like. anyway he continues learning other stuff like weapons, explosives, politics, strategy, tactics....drink mixing and gains a purpose. He needs to bring down or start bringing down the Confed.Thus the cover blurb A single man cannot hope to change an entire galaxy! (by the way this does not mean that it takes a married man to change the galaxy. It just means one guy cant do it by himself. Just thought Id clear up any confusion.) I kept remembering the bad guy quote from the movie Shooter : Theres always a confused soul that thinks that one man can make a difference. And you have to kill him to convince him otherwise.
