This is a confusing book to grade, as it is written with tons of references and heavily researched. The primary (and fatal) flaw for this book is that it is an opinion written as fact where the opinion is laughably argued and presented with complete omission of any fact contrary to his beliefs. Any historian or contemporary person who has written on the subject and disagrees with Paddy is a Bonapartist (used as a derogatory cussword) and is clearly wrong. Frequent insulting language is used on these folks, and Napoleon is rarely written in the text without a negative adjective helper like tyrannical added. Griffith champions several obscure French officers as the creators of all the military tactics Napoleon used so successfully, though Paddy would argue Napoleon was quite average and maybe even sub-par as a commander. He also considers the Peninsula War an epic campaign often ignored by Bonapartists...I really laughed out loud at that. His British origins have tainted this book badly, and any battle not fought by Britain must be less significant. How ironic that Britain never actually defeated Napoleon in battle...for even Waterloo was a victory won by the Prussians saving Wellington. Griffiths hate of Napoleon is pretty much all you get to see here, and the bulk of the volume is made of weak arguments giving credit to anyone else but Napoleon for the triumphs of the French armies. How wrong is Griffith? Suvorov wrote in 1799 on the greatness of this young French general named Napoleon and warned the world to beware. Suvorov, one of the greatest generals of the period, said this...making him a Bonapartist I guess before the multitude of great victories Napoleon won after Suvorovs death. The one positive take from this book is the plethora of sources used and some fine details on several obscure battles of this period which see little print. The book is worth a read, but be forewarned that the slant is very unprofessional and heavily biased to a British perspective.
