Look how happy Robert is: he has a mother and father and a cute pink house to live in on a farm. But their are HORRORS ahead! Not really HORRORS, this is a kid’s beginner reader, afterall. But still, THINGS ARE GOING TO CHANGE! Robert has no idea that his idyllic, sweet, and innocent childhood is about to come to end. And what epic event could cause such a thing? Roses on a birthday cake! Stupid roses ruining things and causing allergy mayhem!So Robert’s birthday rolls around and what better way to celebrate it than having a party. All of Robert’s BFFs come bearing gifts. Robert’s mother bakes a cake (I can tell she made it from scratch and not from a box mix). Everyone was having a good ol’ time until Robert’s mother decided to add some roses (the real ones, not the kind made from icing) to the cake — because I guess roses on a birthday cake make it more birthday-y and festive. But oh noes! Robert is ALLERGIC to roses! One big ol’ sneeze from Robert and the party’s over! The sneeze-y page spread is funny — and it probably isn’t too much of a spoiler to say there are more sneeze-y page spreads to come!Robert’s parents are ALARMED at this sudden turn of sneeze-y events and call for the doctor at once. After conducting some scientific tests (involving roses of course) the doctor concludes that roses are VERY BAD for Robert and that he must LEAVE AT ONCE because there are too many stupid roses all over the farm.SAD FACE. But Robert takes this all in stride, packs his suitcase, and leaves for the city, confident that he will find SOME KIND of job there. The wee little tear shedded by Robert’s mother is priceless. LOVE that sad little detail!Now I don’t know much about history and labor laws, but I’m guessing child labor laws didn’t exist, or weren’t enforced much, when this book was published back in 1962. Or maybe that doesn’t even matter since Robert is a HORSE and not a PERSON. Still, animal rights are important but we’ll save that discussion for another time.What follows next is a humorous story relating Robert’s life in the city. Robert does obtain employment (suitable for a horse so you won’t see Robert trying to type on a typewriter or anything) but he always ends up getting sacked because stupid roses keep popping up the most unexpected times — thus causing Robert to sneeze and unintentionally cause chaos.BUT there’s a really fun twist at the end (OF COURSE!) where Robert’s sneezing ends up being a VERY GOOD thing. And a life-changing discovery (no it’s not Allegra, Claritin, or Zyrtec) permits Robert to return home, too!All in all, a WONDERFUL story that will keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next!all my reviews can be found at www.isniffbooks.wordpress.composted 4-4-15edited 4-5-15 to correct typo
