Wasnt bad, but wasnt good either. I put this in my get rid of pile as I will not read it again. Despite the main characters age of 14 years old I would not give this to pre-teens or young teens to read. There is harsh language and very difficult scenes...very raw book. The parents are borderline abusive using a strap, fists, or open hands to punish the girl and there is a scene with pigs burned in a barn and a scene of chickens slaughtered for a meal that are very difficult to read for animal lovers. Was not impressed with those violent scenes when I thought I was going to read a book about a young girl visiting Ireland and learning how to be friends with her mom.Which is another thing...mom seems a little bi-polar. Harsh, unfriendly, almost uncaring to to Mary in the beginning and then by the end she is joyful and happy and friendly, such extreme emotions in the woman. I did read the whole book but I didnt really care for any of the characters. I didnt get a connection with any of them.Think twice before picking this book up and then only if you can get it reasonably cheap for free. Was not an enjoyable read overall although it did have a few good, quirky, and funny moments.
