The Overthrow of Doom is an intriguing mix of genres that never quite collects into a cohesive whole. It is part mystery, political melodrama, contemplative soul-searching, redemptive drama, and greatest hits with superhero action liberally sprinkled throughout. The package is pretty ambitious, which befits a master plan conceived by an egotist like Victor Von Doom. All of these elements succeed in ratcheting up the drama and tension but their conclusions seem pre-ordained. The story begins with the Fantastic Four disbanded. Theyre exploring life outside of their tight, nuclear family. Those external lives are illusions though. Sue, Johnny and Ben never fully developed an identity outside the Fantastic Four. Sues singular chapter comes the closest as we see her relationship with Namor the Sub-mariner explored. This sequence is possibly the best story within the story arc. It explores ideas like eader-worship, the price of identity and how we project images onto the individual, as well as showing how a strong, independent woman and an equally powerful man can have a friendship. Reeds sequence doesnt explore his persona much beyond his image as the rational leader.You get appearances by Diablo, the Red Ghost, and a cameo by the Pyscho-Man. I half expected the Mole Man to show up as the storyline name-checked many of the big FF villains. (Mole Man WOULD show up in a Fantastic Four annual that was published in the same year).The art is largely done by Keith Pollard. He does a fine job and has good storytelling chops. Pablo Marcos inks a few issues that are probably the weakest of the bunch. Marcos is a good illustrator but his more expressive linework robs Pollard of the hardness that helps ground the series. Joe Sinnott is the other major inker and he always elevates the material. In the end, the Overthrow of Doom is an adequate story with some exciting chapters. Its not fantastic but you will find some enjoyment.
