After reading Ronald K. Siegels Intoxication and its chapter on the drug habits of former presidents, I got curious about our most famous alcoholic first lady, Betty Ford. Im definitely impressed by her life as a result of reading her book, specifically her courage in going public and her founding of the clinic that bears her name, but I did find my mind wandering in spots. Perhaps its because the writing style was geared more toward the magazine-reading crowd than a more literary audience. Perhaps it was all the jumps in perspective. You see, the book didnt always stay in Bettys, though hers was the default. For example, in describing the family intervention that brought her to treatment, Betty tells us her perspective, and then we get paragraphs from Pres. Ford, their daughter Susan (who orchestrated the whole thing), the Fords sons, and the nurse who helped them through it. Later, we hear from friends she made in treatment. These are important voices to the story, but it didnt always make for a smooth flow. Parts of the book were excellent, though. My favorite section from Betty was on the thinking that went into gearing the clinic to treat women alcoholics only, a novelty in the early 80s. I also liked the sample from a patients diary. All of it gave insight into what rehab is really like, which is a world I knew very little about till now.But for me, perhaps the most interesting thing of all is the value of sobriety. After Intoxication and all its endless evidence of how ubiquitous the drive to get high actually is, its refreshing to read about people discovering that having a clear mind is its own high. Who knows? Maybe itll actually catch on and become in vogue with the rich and famous. And who knows what that could do for society as a whole?
