Book description
I received this as a Christmas gift last year, and was in no particular hurry to get around to it, which means that a whole year passed during which I was going to London Vegan Meetup events without knowing that I was fraternising with this books editor, whose smiling picture I was pleasantly surprised to see a few pages in. Hi Julie! I recognised the names of a few other contributors too. London is not a small town, but when I bumped into another LVM organiser at a cafe that serves vegan crepes in Camden, neither of us were that surprised. Where else would a vegan be hanging out this close to pancake day? However, if the vegan world is small, its growing fast. Media Diversified listed this article on Veganisms race problem as one of their 10 most-read pieces of 2015. Veganuary, a non-profit that encourages people worldwide to try going vegan for the month of January trumpeted that they had doubled their number of participants this year (my brother joined the fun in Japan) and Aph Koh, as well as setting up a website and facebook group Black Vegans Rock, compiled a (US based) list of 100 Black Vegans to Check Out that didnt even include Benjamin Zephaniah. To cap it all, a few weeks ago I personally spotted Akala eating in the same restaurant as me – hes vegan too!Noting the focus of the previous paragraph I think I may be trying to compensate for the predominance, at least going by pictures, of white contributors to this collection, with the prominent exception of the aforementioned Zephaniah, who has written a foreword, and whose Little Book of Vegan Poems extracted here. Julie distributed calls for entries at vegan events in London and Toronto to gather material, so most of the writers are either based in the UK or Canada. A section Vegans Around the World attempts to widen the scope, but garners only one entry from Africa, and two from Asia, both by white migrants to the countries they write from. Perhaps this acounts for the limited perspective of the majority of the stories here; only Maru Vigo, writing from Peru, applies a decolonising, historical lens to the abuse of animals.Racism in the white vegan movement here in the UK is visible in its origin story: we trace our history back to the coining of the term vegan by Donald Watson and Elsie Shrigley (this book is the first mention Ive seen of her – surprising isnt it that a man got the credit). In this book, Julie calls Adam and Eve the first vegans and mentions the Essenes as a meat excluding culture. She adds many religions from both East and West have long held restrictions and prohibitions on eating meat. This is an Orientalising perspective, suggesting that people other than those in the recently founded (71 years) vegan movement who have avoided meat in East and West have done so in obedience to religious proscription rather than out of compassion. This isnt a history book, but its limited perspective exemplifies that of many white vegans. The picture takes on a little colour (pun intended) when some of the contributors mention their Buddhist practice, drawing on the concept of ahimsa (non harming) (as does Black vegan author, critical race scholar and blogger A. Breeze Harper). This not only reveals another, much older basis and practice of plant-based diets, but also shows that philosophical perspectives from religion are not followed only in obedience but in reflection, and stem from deep ethical considerations. I have never heard any white vegan mention the Rastafarian practice of Ital. When I worked at Holland and Barratt I was educated a little about this by a customer who was a Rastafarian from Jamaica. According to him, Ital is an almost vegan way of eating. This is echoed by Caribbean vegan chefs and caterering companies Ive met. While it remains impossible to get a decent vegan meal in the majority of British style, French or Italian restaurants in London and around my home region, and requests are as often met with bafflement, rudeness and misunderstanding as with interest and helpfulness, it is extremely easy to do so if you go to an Ethiopian restaurant, and at Brick Lane market for instance, there is an all-vegan Ethiopian food stall. There is a fast-food chain selling Ghanaian food that has 2 vegan main meals out of 6 choices, 1 vegan soup out of 2, and actually bothers to label these on the menu (thank you, people of Ghana, for bringing plantain dumplings to London). There are countless Indian vegetarian restaurants. There are vegan pan- [East] Asian buffets. When I went to Brazil as a vegetarian (not vegan) people told me Id starve, but instead I found that every town and city had cheap por kilo cafes devoted specifically to healthy vegetarian or near vegetarian food, and I feasted on brown rice, beans of all colours, sauteed greens, cassava pancakes, beautiful and delicious salads of all kinds, pasta dishes and baked pasties and pies. As with environmentalism, it seems like white people came late to the party and stole all the prizes.Ive witnessed white vegan racism online, for example the response to The Vegan Society (which does great work, and which Im a member of) sharing Aph Kohs list of 100 Black Vegans on facebook. A large number of white vegans and even a few vegans of colour expressed the view that veganism had nothing to do with race or that it was racist to highlight black vegans (as ever folks are reading the white man dictionary to learn about racism). The Media Diversified article I mentioned earlier drew attention to the way vegans often compare animal agriculture to antiblackness and slavery, often using disturbing imagery. It also drew an enormous backlash from white vegans furious about being criticised in this way, revealing the extent of the problem. I was actually spurred to go fully vegan by reading about the US food supply, not because of the treatment of animals (which I was still in denial about), but the treatment of People of Colour agricultural workers. As a white person, I often fail to realise how veganism or animal agriculture intersect with white supremacy, and the UK movement must work on raising awareness and decolonisation much as the Food Empowerment Project does over the Atlantic...Back to the book(!) I enjoyed reading many of the personal stories, some eloquently written, some amusing, many heartening. I particularly enjoyed the poem about making ice cream from bananas, Make Your Own by Lisa Ceneri. I recommend following her advice!Nothing persuades like a story, and my reflection as I read so many reminiscences of the moment when the writer made the connection that sparked their aspiration or commitment to living vegan, was that it just gets harder and harder to understand why the people around you are still eating animals and animal products. Books usually make it easier for me to empathise with people, so I took a pause. Once a person has sufficient resources to choose food, and awareness about what really goes on in animal agriculture and ceases to believe in the mythology around it, how can they go on buying in? Im no animal lover, unlike most vegans, I dont like being around non-human animals, and I have a lot more to say about other social justice issues, but going vegan just seems basic to me now. So, I had to read deeper, and hear against what pressures the people here prevailed. If everyone you trust tells you eating meat is good, healthy and even necessary, how do you reach the conclusion that it isnt? If meat-eating is part of your culture, how do you commit to excluding yourself? I guess these problems explain why vegan social networks thrive. See you at VegFest = )
