What to say about this book?I wanted to like it a whole lot more than I did. Unfortunately, it appears that Hippocampus is repeating the worst mistakes of Chaosiums Cycle series. I lay much of this blame squarely on the shoulders of its editor, Robert M. Price. Where this book primarily fails is in story selection.Where its good, its GREAT.Frank Belknap Long, Robert W. Chambers, Ramsey Campbell, Robert Bloch all have great selections here (although not all are particularly related to the books theme). Unfortunately, much of the rest of the story selections, including Prices own works, just arent very good- as in, some of them are the sort of bad that drove me away from NON-Lovecraft written Mythos fiction in the 80s.These are the same problems that dogged many of the Chaosium Cycle books (many of which were also edited by Price). Very uneven story quality, and many only tangentially related to the theme of the collection. It really does beg the question of why youd set out a theme and then include a bunch of works that dont really actually pertain to that theme.In the end Id have to say that the GOOD parts of the book are certainly worth a read (at least for a dedicated Mythos fan), the rest of the book may be worth a read, if youve got nothing else in your To Read pile and are a truly rabid Mythos fan.
