Wasserman’s book celebrates the accomplishments of women members of the National Academy of Science. The women’s stories illustrate that men and women can be equally committed and successful as scientists; however, the playing field is not yet level. Statistics complied by the National Science Foundation match observations that there’s a scarcity of women at the top. Also, it is noted that women progress through the ranks at a slower rate and disappear from mainstream science more often than their male peers. I think most Americans, like the women faculty members surveyed in the 1999 MIT study, believe that gender discrimination has been ‘solved’ ; however, it does not take long to realize that we have much work before us, especially concerning cultural attitudes towards women who take time off for and/or request alternatives to the norm. For example, while women in medicine now have the option to take half time residencies, the women who chose this route are stigmatized by some of their colleagues. Resentment and lack of empathy from colleagues creates hostile environments for many women. We’ve all heard about the benefits and subsidies available to both men and women with children in many European countries. Will we ever be as humane? Progress in cultural change is always slow, but if we truly want to support women in all work environments, we must make a commitment to increasing scheduling flexibility for men and women and continue the campaign to change prejudicial thinking. Books like Door in the Dream, help to affect positive change by increasing awareness and stimulating meaningful discussion about the issues.
