In 1893, a 34-year-old Wellesley professor named Katherine Lee Bates was invited to be a guest lecturer at a college in Colorado Springs. Her journey across the United States would inspire her to write a poem that would later become known as America the Beautiful.During her stop in Chicago, Katherine and a friend visited the Columbian Exposition, where she was struck by the alabaster city by the lake. She noticed those amber waves of grain on a train ride through Western Kansas. And after a thrilling wagon ride up Pikes Peak, the view from the top was purple mountains as far as the eye could see. Two years after her big adventure, Bates sent her completed poem to a magazine called The Congregationalist. It became an instant hit, and soon schools and churches across the country were singing it as a song, albeit set to many different tunes. Eventually, everyone settled on a tune composed in 1888 by Samuel Ward, and we have the song that many Americas believe should be our national anthem.Katherine Lee Bates revised her hymn, as she called it, many times over the years. Once, she wrote about a time when selfish gain would no longer stain her country. Oh, how I wish those words had made it into the final version. The irony of watching multi-millionaire presidential candidates choke over those lines would be just too delicious to bear...On her travels, Bates saw the best this country had to offer, but also the poverty and injustice lying beneath the surface.
