There is more that I want to say about this book, but I will give a quick update first. My teacher Venerable S Dhammika wrote this book, which was published in 2013. He gave me an autographed copy that year, and I only read it recently, just as he is about to retire from public life and retreat into solitude.In this book, he talked about how the term love is generally used loosely and can refer to a broad range of feelings and relationships. That there are many types of love including erotic, familial, conjugal, forbidden love, as well as love for animals, and friends. He talked about the different light and dark shades that love can take and how even if many of these relationships and aspects of love are psychologically conditioned, it does not mean that they are worth less. Except perhaps for the highest spiritual love, most other types need to be reciprocated......Love is not robbed of its goodness and its majesty because it is conditioned.He talked about how Buddha valued kalyani mitta or spiritual friendship, and how Buddha spoke about friendship more than any other relationship. He touched on the four facets of the Brahma Vihara - metta, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity and how each is appropriate for different circumstances.I really like this book. It gives breadth and depth about love, including the nuances of its many shades. I will read it again.Buddha had said: For in this world hatred is never stilled by yet more hatred. It is love that hatred is stilled. This is the eternal truth. And we must remember that.Update: Two additions (1) In the Anguttara Nikaya, Buddha said that there are 11 benefits of metta - one sleeps happily, wakes happily, has no nightmares, is loved by humans, loved by animals and protected by the gods, is not affected by fire poisons and swords (probably means violence from hatred from others), the mind concentrates easily, the complexion is radiant (yay!), one dies without bewilderment and if reborn will be reborn in the highest heaven. Anita Moorjani, who wrote about her near death experience, said love and not fear, keeps us safe. I really believe this.
