When the town of Laan is destroyed, the only known survivor is taken in by a neighboring king. The survivor, Marra, has an eidetic memory, but cannot read or write, and suffers from PTSD. The king who takes her in is young, stubborn, and instantly attracted to her--but, against the norm, he respects her more than anything else. He decides he could use her eidetic memory to his advantage and gives her a job as record keeper during court. He also names her Grevanna of Laan, giving her more power than women, especially former sheep-herders, typically ever have.As the two fall in love, Marra also wins the hearts of the citizens in King Faraans country with her kindness and the obvious joy she brings to their king. She refuses, however, to marry him as she knows she is barren and will not be able to give him an heir. Instead, she decides to take on the task of finding him a worthy queen.My feelings for this book remind me quite a bit of my feelings for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo--both are well written, though difficult for me to get interested in. In both cases, I stuck with them out of optimism and enjoyed the romance-y parts more than the political stuff (as evidenced by my summary up there--theres a lot more going on outside their relationship, I promise). Most unusually, however, I was blindsided when I started loving the book--at one point, Marra is injured and I had to take a break to freak out because I do that and after a minute I stopped and thought, Wait. When did I get so invested in this book? Ah--when I fell in love with the characters, thats when. The exact same thing happened in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and so I give the same advice I give to people about that book: If you start it, stick with it. Its worth it.Both Marra and King Faraan have their share of flaws and their relationship is far from ideal. I personally am not big on the met-you-days-ago-now-I-love-you-madly thing, but it isnt so insufferable from them. Theres a brewing war and traitors and feminism and misogyny and, as I hoped from Author Figart, polyamory (but of course it isnt called that).Actually, now that I think of it, replace brewing war with murder mystery and At the Foot of the Throne is very similar to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, indeed. I think theres room for quite the overlap in their readers.This book is the first (and so far, only published) book in a series and ends on a cliffhanger. I was sad to see it end and can only hope the next installation wont take too long.
