This is not, entirely, Mr. Youngs fault.While a firm believer in the 2nd Coming of Jesus Christ and also someone who feels that being prepared is an important part of that event, I also believe the scripture that says that no man knows the day or the hour, and I believe in adherence to latter-day prophet council on basic preparedness. So, a book identifying kingdoms and events of the last years before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ seems--to me--both pointless and extraneous, and is not one I would normally find myself even remotely interest in.Still though, knowing that my knowledge of the events preceding the 2nd Coming are basic, perhaps event bordering on the ignorant, and having a friend who is intensely interested in this topic and wanted to discuss these things with me in great detail, I accepted the copy of this book he gave me and dove, albeit reluctantly, into it. So, again, this is not, entirely, Mr. Youngs fault. I was not a fan to begin with and he and I had different ideas of the relevance of knowing certain details of the 2nd Coming to start out with.The result, then, was an intense struggle to finish reading what progressively became a longer and longer book. In this wandering analysis, Mr. Young hits a wide range: in some parts he gives extended explanation of the most simple principles of the gospel according to a Latter-Day Saint. While inoffensive, they are somewhat tedious, especially since I could search officially sanctioned Church materials for such information. Then, all of the sudden, Mr. Young swings to the complete opposite end of the spectrum, dabbling with speculation that hangs by a shred. These, at least, are interesting--though Im not sure if being interesting as a result of wondering how anyone could ever justify such strange notions is the kind of attention a writer would hope to maintain. Most of Mr. Youngs suppositions work only because he has managed to take a modern event and pound it enough so that it fits with an obscure scriptural reference ... or he has managed to link wholly unrelated pieces together--some by what seems pure coincidence, others by legitimate scriptural connections--and then try to insist that these random pieces are all part of the grand picture he has in mind for the Second Coming.Some of the methods Mr. Young uses to find references to make his points are remarkably similar to the methods used by those hoping to discredit the LDS Church. For example, he uses quotes from early Church leaders that are either personal--not revelatory--observations or are accounts that are witnessed second or third hand and are usually recorded after the death of the person being quoted. Coupling this sort of reference with a known principle of the 2nd Coming can only lead to a shaky and--my own personal opinion--needless expectation of what the 2nd Coming has in store.I should clarify at this point that Mr. Youngs speculations are generally harmless. No one is going to be a worse person for having read his observations and clearly his intent is altruistic. Though the danger lies in some people converting his observations into obsessions, distracting from routine, daily gospel living. I should also note that Mr. Young includes plenty of doctrinally sound, basic gospel principles in his presentation (at times almost too much), and he certainly includes plenty of long passages of direct scriptural references.The point is, Mr. Young is not doing bad things here. At the same time, the Lord has made it clear that the 2nd Coming is imminent and what needs to be done to prepare for it in the most basic senses. In my opinion, the Lord doesnt expect us to methodically trace out the diluted Greek lineage of every presidential candidate and then pack our bags and slap a Missouri or Bust bumper sticker on our Suburban when one is elected. In my experience, most big changes in life from the Lord have caught me by surprise, in spite of any amount of speculation or educated guesswork to the contrary, but not all of them have caught me unprepared. Thats my own speculation about the 2nd Coming--and forgive me for imposing it on you, but at least didnt have to read a whole book about it, right?
