Men with guns face humiliation: Jimmy's daughter wants a fancy wedding which he can't afford on his NYPD salary, so her step-father smiles and offers to pay Jimmy's share. Paul, Jimmy's partner, thinks his wife is two-timing him with a neighbor, so he hides a video camera in their bedroom. Jimmy can get money for the wedding by selling a rare baseball card, which he loses when the dealer he's selling it to is robbed. The robbery is connected to the thugs running drugs, as the partners discover when they search for the card. Will Paul be a cuckold and Jimmy upstaged at his daughter's wedding?
Jimmy's rare baseball card is robbed. Since it's his only hope to pay for his daughter's upcoming wedding, he recruits his cop partner Paul to track down the robber, a memorabilia-obsessed gangster.
So help me, I found Cop Out to be not completely bad. Yes, that's a backhanded compliment, but I assure you that it's completely deserved. Cop Out, from its inane title to its derivative plot, has no business being anything but a hokey hoedown of banal buddy cop dopey behavior. And yet's it's not as gut-wrenchingly awful as all that.

Cop Out stars Bruce Willis and Tracey Morgan as veteran police partners on the trail of a gangbanger (Guillermo Diaz) who loves baseball memorabilia and who just happened to steal Willis' super-valuable baseball card, the one he was going to have to sell to finance his daughter's wedding; better to do that than have his wife's new, rich husband pay for it all.

But that cop-movie aspect is almost irrelevant. What matters, and the only thing that really puts this one in the same general universe as the likes of, say, Lethal Weapon (in terms of approach, not overall quality), is the thrust-and-parry repartee between straight-arrow Willis (a 180 from his John McClane character/caricature) and loose-cannon, uber-hip Morgan. They're funny together, and they're given funny things to say in funny situations. That helps a lot.

What's puzzling about this movie is that Kevin Smith directed it, the first of his that he didn't also write. That's puzzling because the dialog isn't really this movie's strong point. If I hadn't seen Smith's name attached to this in writing, I'd never have guessed he had had a hand in it.

But ultimately, it doesn't matter much, as it's just plain not terrible. You can tell I'm trying not to go overboard in my hyperbole, right? I want to present you with a level-headed, even-handed look at whether this is worth your time. And it is, with lowered expectations. It's amusing, although not for the whole family to watch.
Let me start by saying I actually walked out of the theater this movie was so bad! I love Bruce Willis (Tracy Morgan has his moments)and was expecting a lot from this film. The plot was interesting and had a lot of promise to be a very entertaining film. That didn't happen. Tracy Morgan was a complete joke(NOT THE FUNNY KIND). He wasn't funny and really took away from Bruce Willis in a comedy role, which Bruce has done before and done well. Tracys antics came off has just plain annoying and way over the top. I spent half the film just waiting on him to stop talking long enough for Bruce to step up as the true bad *** that he his. Neither ever happened. It didn't help that these two "cops", I use the term loosely, were completely incompetent. They have been partners for 9 years!! Are you kidding me! The writing didn't help sell this partnership either. This should go down as the worst crime fighting duo in history. I actually read where some one compared them to Lethal Weapon. WOW! Not even close! Lets set aside the fact that Mel and Danny actually knew how to be cops but guess what! They were funny too! "COP OUT" is 0-2 for that. If Danny had been that distracted by these ridiculous antics, a lousy cell phone call or a silly teddy bear, It's certain they wouldn't have made it past Lethal Weapon 1... Save your money
Desperation oozes from every frame of Cop Out, which front-loads its best joke -- then spends the rest of its running time endlessly spinning its wheels.
Cop Out is a comedy film written by screenwriting brothers, Mark and Robb Cullen. The screenplay started out as a spec script by Mark and Robb Cullen, so Kevin Smith's writing talent was not needed. He did not do a re-write of the script, despite some reports stating so. In his stand-up TV special "Too Fat for 40" he stated that he was essentially taking a break from writing as he tried to figure out why some of his more recent movies (namely "Zack and Miri Make a Porno") weren't doing as well. He realized his life circumstances had changed from the days of "Clerks" and "Mallrats" and that to try to write a movie like that at this stage of his life wouldn't be honest. He liked the script for "A Couple of Dicks" (the original and working title of "Cop Out") and loved growing up watching buddy cop movies with his dad. Jason Lee, who frequently works with Smith, appears in a brief (two scene) role as the step-father of Jimmy Monroe (Bruce Willis)'s daughter. Seann William Scott, Tracy Morgan, and Ernest O'Donnell appear in this film as well. a5c7b9f00b
