A young woman grows up to be a stone-cold assassin after witnessing her parents' murder as a child in Bogota. She works for her uncle as a hitman by day, but her personal time is spent engaging in vigilante murders that she hopes will lead her to her ultimate target - the mobster responsible for her parents' death.
Revenge movies have been made over and over again. Some get it right, like Leon: The Professional and others get it terribly wrong, like Drive Angry. Colmbiana falls somewhere in the middle, and that's unfortunate. Olivier Megaton's direction is fairly decent, as shown by the intricate opening sequence. Regrettably, the problem with the film is in a script put together by Robert Mark Kamen and Luc Besson. What makes this even more unfortunate is that Luc Besson previously wrote and directed the previously mentioned Leon: The Professional, and has written other hit films. It's Besson's resume and reputation that set my expectations on the higher side, only to be disappointed. Megaton's casting is for the most part well put together. The extremely slim and slender Zoe Saldana does a solid job as Cataleya, and Cliff Curtis is excellent as Emelio, Cataleya's uncle. Michael Vartan, however, was miscast, and I consider myself a fan. Vartan's doe-eyed look doesn't work in an action thriller of this type. A stronger presence is needed, and Vartan does not provide strength; only a dull presence. Saldana most recently appeared in Star Trek and Avatar, showing promise and that she's more than just a pretty face and nice body. In Colombiana, Saldana effectively demonstrates that she possess the necessary tools to be an action star. The script does not do her justice though, putting Cataleya in situations that any intelligent assassin wouldn't allow themselves to be put; and that doesn't include the unlikely ways in which Cataleya gets in and out of specific predicaments. If you are looking for believability, then you need to look somewhere else. If you are looking for deeply developed characters, I'm sorry to disappoint you but the only thing that's deep is the stuff you are careful not to step in when walking in someone's yard or alley. What started out as a movie with tiny potential, ended up as something far worse than just being terrible; it ended up being a movie that's mediocre, unoriginal and predictable. What's even worse though, is that it's not memorable in any way and it's not worth remembering.

Grade: C-

Visit our site at www.twodudereview.com
Cateleya(Zoe Saldana) is a perfect killer, she knows how to get in and out without being detected, also has amazing fighting skills. She is good with any weapon, a gun, knife, you name it. But in her personal life, she lives a very quiet peaceful existence. She has an artist boyfriend(Michael Vartan). But she slips up, when she starts leaving marks on her victims. In hopes it would draw the gangster that killed her parents. Then an FBI agent(Lennie James), starts closing in on her. How will this all turn out?

Zoe Saldana really sells this movie, as an action hero. It feels like if Jason Statham was a female, it would be Zoe Saldana. This had some pretty good action scenes, and some good shoot outs, and it has a pretty good fight scene also. But it does slow down in spots, and gets a little boring in some scenes. Michael Vartan was alright, he was just there. But all in all, a pretty good action film.
The overall effect is distancing; there are some early comic moments that have you laughing along with the movie, but eventually the clashing tones and preposterousness just have you laughing.
"The Fade Out Line" by Phoeboe Killdeer & The Short Straws. There are three versions: the U.S. theatrical, the international, and an unrated cut targeted for so-called home theater use in the States. The US theatrical version is most censored to obtain its PG-13 rating (for violence, disturbing images, intense sequences of action, sexuality and brief strong language). It has not been made available for home cinema use. Beside it's US theatrical release, the PG-13 version is only available as rental DVD in the USA or as Video on Demand. It has been heavily censored from its original version.

The European theatrical version was longer, leaving some intensive scenes. The Unrated version is approximately four minutes longer than the international version and features some extended action and story sequences. a5c7b9f00b
