Frozen in the ice for decades, Captain America is freed to battle against arch-criminal, The Red Skull.
During World War II, a brave, patriotic American Soldier undergoes experiments to become a new supersoldier, "Captain America." Racing to Germany to sabotage the rockets of Nazi baddie "Red Skull", Captain America winds up frozen until the 1990s. He reawakens to find that the Red Skull has changed identities and is now planning to kidnap the President of the United States.
Steve Rogers (Matt Salinger) is a handicapped (he has polio) guy who, through a mysterious process, is transformed into super athletic Captain America by the military. His arch-nemesis, the Red Skull, transformed by the same process, is intent on world domination, and only Captain America can stop him.

Where does one start? I guess the script. Plot holes that you can drive a bus through abound in this film. So many inconsistencies -- I'm not going to watch this film again so you'll just have to trust me. Captain America is tied to a rocket that is launched from somewhere in Europe (Italy? Germany? France?) and headed towards the White House. How is he going to get out of this one? I thought. Well, he breaks the fins on the rocket right before he hits the White House and ends up in Alaska. How much fuel did this rocket have? Cap gets frozen in ice and reawakens fifty years later. He starts walking from Alaska to his hometown in California, but the bad guys and one good guy find him in the Canadian wilderness. I don't know too much about Canadian geography, but I do know one thing -- Canada is BIG. And how the good guys and bad guys come upon Cap -at the same time- is amazing.

The secret laboratory where Cap was created was underneath Roz's Diner -- fifty years later, Roz's Diner is in the same exact place. So was the secret laboratory. A poorly lighted and filmed fight scene takes place in the not used laboratory. The only action in the film, and we don't get to see it. In fact, we don't get to see a lot of stuff in this film. Cap has incredible athletic abilities, but these abilities are never totally filmed. The scene where the president is kidnapped is described to us by a television news reporter -- we don't get to see that either.

Other comic book films, in particular Batman and Spiderman, our heroes have psychological depth. Not Cap. He's like a big Boy Scout, and he's an American patriot, no matter what, because America is always right, right? Salinger's performance is wooden, but I can't blame him, I blame the material.

I wish I watched this film with my friends to MSTie it, but alas, I'm not going to sit through this again.
Back in Marvel's early 90's days. This God awful, pathetic, cheap, and cheesy film plagued the world. It's horrible. Not just the cheap costumes or poor make-up, which goes so far as to give Captain America plastic ears to stop chafing. Captain America is the worst hero of all time. His greatest technique is pretending to be sick so that people get out of their cars. Very confusing, especially when the Red Skull is revealed to be Italian for some reason. It's also poorly shot, with one segment lit entirely with blue lights, like some dodgy porno. The shield throwing soon gets old, and even it's camp charm couldn't keep my attention. I'd accept this from the 60's, but after the release of Burton's Batman, comic films should have known better. If this wasn't bad enough, some terrible song numbers are used to cause you to vomit.

The movie was directed by Albert Pyun which apparently seemed to have similar consequences as his most famous movie Cyborg. After differences during the production process, the studio altered the movie quite heavily and the final cut didn't have much in common with Pyun's original version. Furthermore, the scheduled theatrical release was postponed several until the movie was released direct-to video in 1992.

The Director's Cut

...is available on disc 2 of the 3-Disc-Set from Pyun's homepage and it's approx. 14 minutes longer than the regular US-Version. Unfortunately, the end result isn't as spectacular as expected due to its history. There's just a longer block of scenes in the middle of the movie which is a nice charakter development. The new footage proves the stronger focus of Captain America's inner conflict. Besides new footage, some footage has simply been recycled as flashback. As already mentioned, it's rather unspectacular and it doesn't look very professional either.

The Commentary Version

AS mentioned before, the Director's Cut (differing from the Original Version) is only available on Pyun's homepage. The customer always receives a 3-Disc-Set whereas the 3rd disc contains a newer production of Pyun's company. Technicalla, the first 2 discs BOTH contain Pyun's favorite version (verifiable due to the alternate beginning and the flashback at the end) but there's still a difference of several minutes which is confusing. But don't worry, the following comparison will shed some light on it.

Disc 1 contains the unedited workprint with a director's commentary track instead of the regular audio track (there's a black screen for 4 minutes at the beginning which contains nothing but Pyun's voice). In this commentary, Pyun mentions his plans to edit this version for a future release on Blu-ray. a5c7b9f00b
