Candidacy Papers Begin Trickling In

Two political party representatives submitted candidacy papers of their aspirants to the post of President of the Republic on July 13, 2018.

The Constitutional Council on July 13, 2018 started receiving copies of candidacy papers from representatives of aspirants to the post of the President of the Republic in the October 7, 2018 presidential election. 

This is in respect of the provisions of the Electoral Code in Section 123 (2), “Candidacy papers shall be submitted to the General Directorate of Elections at Elections Cameroon. They may also be submitted to the Regional Branches of Elections Cameroon, which shall forward them within 24 hours to the General Directorate of Elections.” 

After submitting the candidacy papers at the General Directorate of Elections, “A copy thereof shall be forwarded forthwith to the Constitutional Council by the candidate or his representative, against an acknowledgement of receipt,” paragraph 3 of the same section states.

In Paragraph 4, “ Candidacy papers may further be delivered by registered mail with acknowledgement of receipt, which shall be addressed to the General Directorate of Elections with a copy sent to the Constitutional Council, provided that such registered letter is received within the time-limit of 10 days of the date of the convening of electors.”

It was in respect of the provision of the Electoral Code that representatives of the aspirant of the ruling Cameroon  People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM), President Paul Biya submitted his candidacy papers at the Constitutional Council on July 13, 2018 afternoon after the same procedure at ELECAM.

The CPDM candidate’s representatives were the Secretary General of the CPDM Central Committee, Jean Nkuete and the Minister, Director of the Civil Cabinet at the Presidency of the Republic, Samuel Mvondo Ayolo.

After CPDM proposed candidate’s representatives, came those of Maurice Kamto, of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC) party. The delegation was led by the MRC’s Treasurer, Professor Alain Fogue in the evening.
