But through Mrs. Pochmans eyes one can almost see the trees grow, the birds nest and protect their young, the fish dart under the foliage planted for their benefit as well as for the protection of the banks of the stream and pools. And her descriptions of deer and other wildlife linger long in the the minds eye.The wealth of information in this book is deceptive because of the modesty and joyousness apparent in the telling. The reader will come away from it thinking this is how life should be -- a delightful and rewarding enterprise.~~front & back flapsAll thats true. And this is one of my favorite genres: leaving the city (or suburbs) behind and learning how to live in the country or the woods. (Is there a name for that genre?) But this book just didnt do it for me. Henry and Ruth and Virginia never came alive for me,but remained cardboard cutouts. Her descriptions of the reforestation, stream improvement, watershed management, and conservation and restoration of wildlife habitat didnt engage me either,nor did her descriptions of the local wildlife and their interactions with them. It was her writing style which put me off, although I cant quite put my finger on why. The closest I can come is to think her style is typical of the times she lived in (the book was published in 1968). When I think back to the television shows popular during the 1950s & 60s, I remember Leave it to Beaver, Ozzie & Harriet Nelson, etc. Nice enough shows in their way, but uncomplicated and simplistic, especially when compared to the great breadth and depth of material available today.I was disappointed --I was very prepared to love this book. But at page 152 (and having skimmed a great many of them) out of 232 pages, Id exceeded my benchmark of halfway through without becoming immersed, and abandoned it for greener pastures.
