I rated this book based on the story content vs. the art. The artwork by the Brothers Hildebrandt is amazing - lush, beautiful, and could be a separate picturebook in its own right.But the story by Jerry Nichols? Can you say Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings? A group of characters travel, meet,and join to defeat the evil Death Lord Torgon (Darth Vader?), who had once been an elfin prince that became corrupted by the Ring...er, I mean, the Land of Gorgorath. Within this merry band we have the chosen hero Ailwon (Luke Skywalker, complete with similar looking clothes and physical appearance, judging by the illustrations), Oolu the Gwarpy (Ewoks?), Gwynn the elf maiden, a couple of dwarves, an archer, and Elgan, the wizard.Maybe a gentle introduction to fantasy for the younger reader. A positive component to the book was the inclusion of several ethnically diverse groups/characters which helped to expand the world view of this tale. But in the end, a very formulaic story, the grand battles dont seem very grand, and for such a long epic, an actually pretty boring read.
