Book description
Target audience: People interested in esotericism, mysticism, theosophy, New Age, the Age of Aquarius and the supernatural.About the author: Alice Ann Bailey was a writer of more than twenty-four books on theosophical subjects, and was one of the first writers to use the term New Age. Born in Manchester, England, she moved to the United States in 1907, where she spent most of her life as a writer and teacher. Her works, written between 1919 and 1949, describe a wide-ranging system of esoteric thought covering such topics as how spirituality relates to the solar system, meditation, healing, spiritual psychology, the destiny of nations, and prescriptions for society in general. She described the majority of her work as having been telepathically dictated to her by a Master of Wisdom, initially referred to only as the Tibetan or by the initials D.K., later identified as Djwal Khul. She wrote on religious themes, including Christianity, though her writings are fundamentally different from many aspects of Christianity or other orthodox religions. Her vision of a unified society included a global spirit of religion different from traditional religious forms and including the concept of the Age of Aquarius.Structure of the book: Around 192 pages, divided in a sort of introduction, seven chapters and a conclusion.Overview: I will probably upset many people with this review, but I believe it is better to say the truth, no matter what. In fact, I will speak more about the context in which this book was written than the book itself. Because this is the only way you can understand what was really written and, most importantly, why was written. The content of the book: Bailey says in this book that the reappearance of the Christ (or the Second Coming of Christ) is inevitable because God’s intervention in history is continuous. At definite periods in the history of human evolution, the word of God has manifested in human form in order to establish the certain spiritual and intellectual principles. There have been many such messengers (messiahs or Avatars) over the ages, which have occurred according to cosmic law, when certain have been fulfilled. In 1947 Bailey said, through this book, that at the time was the beginning and end of an age - the beginning of Aquarius and the end of Pisces - marking also a major turning point in the evolution of human consciousness from individual need to the needs of humanity as a whole, from personal salvation to world service, and from materiality to spirituality. It seems that this climaxing transition must be marked in both its stages, beginning and end, by the Christ Himself, and a principle anchored in human consciousness, which embodies not only the love or God established for the age of Pisces, but also the new potency for the future, the Will of God.The context of the book: if you had trouble following the lines above or there is something you did not understand, then the book is ten times more blurry. Below are a few words about the context surrounding the book:a) Given the fact that this book was written under the guide of an invisible master, seen only by Bailey, the statements contained in the book are nothing but cheap speculations. There is absolutely no difference between me or you dreaming various things at night and Bailey’s “revelations.”b) Certain patterns can be noticed in mystical books, including this one: the idealization of the past (which signals that there is a problem with the present), the importance of their time (all moments are important and humanity is always at crossroads), the vague language (at the end of such a book you realize you learned absolutely nothing), the placement of the truth in inaccessible places (such as Tibet, India, Antarctica, Atlantis, the jungle of South America or parallel universes), superior entities that hide like rats from the public eye, a hidden truth, accessible only to some, and ultimately the division of the world in two clear sides: idiots and spiritual enlightened people.c) If I have to summarize this book in a couple of words, I would say: the absolute spiritual kitsch. Bailey competes with Helena Blavastsky at the title of the queen of the spiritual kitsch. The trend of spiritualism, New Age and the rebirth of mysticism manifested at a time when Darwinism was ravaging Christianity, science was denying the spiritual realm and the United States of America was experiencing the Third Great Awakening. But, unlike Blavatsky, Alice Bailey is also linked to the sequelae of the First World War. For example, Alice and Foster Bailey founded Lucis Trust in 1923. It is no wonder that after you see so much death, pain and horror your mind rejects reality and seeks refuge in parallel universes and hears the voices of “benevolent” superior beings. Under the telepathic guidance of the Master of Wisdom Bailey received enough information to write 19 books. The year of The Reappearance of the Christ is, again, not a coincidence: 1947, shortly after the Second World War. Mysticism is based on proportions and divine interventions. So Bailey, probably like many other mystics, expected the great evils of Hitler and the Second World War to be followed by a great good in the coming of the Messiah and the establishment of the Millennium. In the book Bailey suggests that the imminence of the reappearance of the Christ is sensed and expected by many, which may be true to a certain extent or it may be an attempt to influence the reader in adopting her sick opinions. In any case… surprise! The Cold War followed, together with the nuclear threat. And the prophetic writings of Bailey failed.Strong points: If you like blurry texts that can mean anything you want to mean, then this is a strong point. If not, I simply cannot identify a strong point at this book; it is a complete waste of time.Weak points: I could enumerate endless weak points, but I’ll say only that the theories advanced by Bailey in this book insult universal history, science and common sense._______________★★★ Follow us on Goodreads★★★ Visit our website www.reasonandreligion.org
