I am really enjoying this series of books, they keep getting better and better. This one was only 375 different characters and based on a Pu Songling story. Called the bookworm, (or Book idiot) it was about a man who loved books more than anything and instilled that love in his son. At 30 the son was all alone, had achieved nothing, but loved to read. In Zeitins book on Pu Songling she discusses the obsession that is the focus of this story. Shu tians love of books brings a real life woman out of the book he is reading. She makes him promise not to read anymore, instead she teaches him how to play chess, drink wine and make friends. They end up having a son, and then a year later she threatens to leave him unless he burns all his books. He refuses. A magistrate finds out about the beautiful wife and beats Shu tian until he tells them her secret. The magistrate ends up burning all the books, and the wife and son are never seen again. While simple to read there are some great moments, my favourite was talking about one of the ways to drink wine, 就是看看书喝点儿酒，喝点儿酒看看书。。。 which caused Shu tian to respond, 我太喜欢这么喝酒了，看书喝酒，喝就看书很有意思 Naturally I totally agreed, though fear even a beautiful woman appearing out of a book wouldnt be enough to stop me reading!
