I got this through my librarys InterLibrary Loan, which is a wonderful way to access all collections across the state. Thats how I can get obscure titles that are moldering away in some university library up in the northern part of the state. It is wonderful!This is for research for my novel which is set in Scotland. Toying with the idea of having one of the characters be a selkie. But then, hmmm. Not sure if it would fit. These are folklore collected by a man who went around Scotland and listened to old folks. And its a good thing he did. They had stories to tell. These stories dont really vary much. It is rare for there to be a happy ending. They generally include dire warnings. And the description of the seal people is almost identical throughout. But I have no doubt that people sat around the croft in the evening, while smoking their pipe and letting dinner digest, and told these stories. And if your cousins aunts friend knew someone, well, they must be true.I liked several things about this volume, the way it was put together. There were little introductions for each story, telling about how it was collected. This is important. There is also a little glossary in the back, in case you didnt know cracked meant sharing the news. (In the case of characters who stood around and cracked) I found it helpful for my purposes, but more than that, a valuable collection of stories from a specific culture.
