After much professional and public debate he convinced the people in his area to let him scratch into the skin of children who had not had smallpox, some of the material he harvested from the cows udders.For centuries medical men, from physicians to magicians had knows that the crusted scab that formed over a healing smallpox ulcers on the skin could be protective. Unfortunately, it could also kill. If this dry crust was scratched into the skin (in China it was inhaled into the lungs) one of two things would happen to a patient who had never had a smallpox infection. An ugly ulcer might form at the site of the inoculation and the patient might suffer from fevers, headache and general malaise for a few days and then recover splendid health, protected from smallpox forever. On the other hand, the results of the inoculation might lead to a full-blown attack of smallpox with scarring or death.. (Given the danger associated with the procedure, it is an interesting comment on the sexist nature of Turkey in the sixteenth century that fathers insisted on their daughters being inoculated to protect their beauty.)Among the cells that combine to form the lining of Jennys throat are specialised cells know as antigen-presenting cells or APCs..... Jenny is feeling poorly. She had developed a fever... The influenza virus is not responsible for her symptoms. The APCs working on the virus have secreted a substance knows as interleukin 1, which has many functions, one of which is to produce a fever. ...Why?
