Yo, Jean-Paul, whats the friggin deal mon amie? This shabby 192 page critical study of famed Enfant Terrible and Frances favorite malcontent, Charles Baudelaire is far too accessible! I was able to understand almost 90% of it and it only took me a few days to read. What gives? I make fun of Sartre far too much for someone who spells pychiatry wrong 70% of the time, but Ive also read (and finished) 3 of his books, including his 500 page opus on Jean Genet Saint Genet --which I later found out he wrote while on mushrooms--and as much as I have an interest in his subject, I find the guys personality as a writer to be so assured no matter how far-fetched his theories that its entertaining and even funny. The best thing about Sartre is that he is 100% committed (I know, Im using percentages a lot, I dont know why) to giving his subject the benefit of the narcissistic doubt. Rather than writing Baudelaire off as a repressed homosexual, Sartre spends almost 200 pages loyally ascertaining that his subject was such a unique and isolated individual that he could not commit to any one woman without feeling the need to flee, and that his unhealthy and creepy relationship with his mother was closer in proportion to a Hamlet/Gertrude tragedy than simply the misguided jealousy of a pampered mamas boy closet case.I did think Baudelaire was very accessible, so perhaps it would be a good Sartre Starter (alliteration is killin it!). His study of contradictions and human isolation is very well-done and fascinating and really nails some of the ideas his psylocibin-drenched brain was trying to get a hold off in Saint Genet about the rebel nature of the artist in society. As if to echo his simplification and essential clairty, the cover has this cool line drawing of Baudelaire by Matisse. Other Sartre reads that may be worth checking out, but not worth me reviewing: Nausea, Sartre on Theatre.
