Again the author has decided to retroactively introduce new characters with a history that lends them to being integral to the universe. The story is a cute little short that again shows that Ms. Spencer has a flair for characterization. Her Elfhome universe continues to be a rich ground for those misfit characters that are easy to picture. I dont mind the expansion of the Elfhome world but Im getting more than a little annoyed that the first book is essentially worthless at this point. So much supposedly happens off screen that the story doesnt make sense anymore. Bare Snow is a cool new character but now we have a new elf with a new clan that also can perform magic. Yet she doesnt seem to be doma (she has tattoos and all doma crossbreeds are to be killed remember) or sekasha (otherwise her perfection would offset her strange clan birth) so just how is she able to do magic like she did? And why does she seem to have been trained as an assassin and seems to be hunting the Skin Clan and is given to hiding truth/deceit. This would mean that some elves are aware that the Skin Clan might still be around and are looking for them. Yet, Wolf Who Rules and his hand seem to not ever look for them and he is in the royal lineage and is essentially the ruler of half the world as the viceroy of the western lands. Bare Snow honestly just by existing smashes aside just about everything the elf society is supposed to be.We also find out that the human underground and tourism is larger and much more expansive than is implied in the previous books. It is also implied that human trafficking for oni breeders has taken place and there are humans enslaved somewhere nearby. So now we have the elves who have been trying to control and monitor Portland missing the entire tengu population at least one oni army and multiple enslaved human populations in their city.I wish the author would have just kept to the timeline as it is written rather than always trying to add people in. I understand it is hard now that the elves are at war in this timeline to figure out how to introduce everyone. But a truly great storyteller figures out how to work within the framework they have created rather than try and remake it anew for new concepts. The more the author writes of the story the less it makes sense.How can an army as large as the Oni gathered (including the tengu) survive in the Portland wilderness without foraging. We are given to understand that Portland needs to ship food in because they arent self sufficient yet they can support three or four hidden populations without impacting the area that the elves would notice. And these failings of the EPA and all earth agencies must have an impact on who runs the checks going forward. I also imagine a rather detailed census and reissuing of papers must be done. Also if half-elf children are that common that women can have them with impunity shouldnt there be a couple hundred after 20+ years in Elfhome. And if they arent so strange why would Tinker having a relationship with Windwolf seem to be so outside of experience that the first book implied it never happens and no-one knows any of the rules that would govern relationships between the two species. This and other stories seem to imply that elves just want to fuck human women and dont want to date. Not to mention a number of people on Earth who can probably be genetically identified now as descended from elf or oni. It seems that the technology they have shown on earth would have noticed something genetically for the crossbred populations at some point.Wow. This turned into a rant, essentially the story is a nice addition to the Elfhome universe which must be fun to play in. I just wish Ms. Spencer would care a little more about going forward with the story rather than rewriting cannon history as we know it.gallandro
