Based on the very underground comic book, a Tibetan monk becomes a mentor to a young street kid whom he can teach to protect a scroll.
An ancient scroll that, when recited out loud, grants whoever reads it the power to turn the world into whatever he/she wants it to be. A person deemed worthy to protect the scroll is chosen and that person is granted invincibility which only lasts for 60 years, so another guardian is chosen. During World War 2, in a monastery, the new guardian is chosen. Just as he is given the scroll by the previous protector the monastery is suddenly under attack by some Nazis, the leader wants the scroll for obvious reasons. So the guardian escapes by jumping off a cliff. For 60 years, the Nazi would chase him all over the world. And just as his time is ending he searches for his successor and the one he thinks it is, is a tough street kid named Kar. But Kar is not exactly a righteous person.
If this movie could be summed up in one word it's "potential". Ironicly that's also one of the more overused words in the movie. Fat has the speed and acting talent to keep this from totally sinking but that's not saying much. And Williams-Scott looks so lost in all of this. They are both talented enough that they it could have worked. The problem: incompetent directing and writing. Nazi's & cliche's abound, save your money for next weeks movies.
"Bulletproof Monk" looks better as a comic book, than at the movies. The problem with the screen treatment, director Paul Hunter has given the material, is that however good the special effects might be, there is no soul to the story.

As an action film, "Bulletproof Monk" is not completely unwatchable, quite the contrary, but it appears that perhaps an oriental director might have done something more with the thin plot.

The tremendously charismatic Yun-Fat Chow does a lot to enhance the film. His pairing with an otherwise light actor, Seann Wm. Scott, proves to be a felicitous decision. Jaime King, as Jade, doesn't have much to do. Karel Roden makes a lot out of the Nazi Strucker, and finally, Victoria Smurfit, shows she is having a lot of fun playing bad Nina.
Action star Chow Yun-Fat's latest is as thin as the buzz cut he sports in Bulletproof Monk.
