I saw the poster for this film, I could guess the premise of the film, and then critic Mark Kermode giving his opinion on it, and it was pretty much what I expected, I still went to the cinema to see it, for a bit of fun, directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, The Raven, Survivor). Basically Shaun Russell (Gabrielle Union, also producing), the estranged daughter of Isaac (Damien Leake), is driving to her father's mansion, with her children Jasmine (Ajiona Alexus) and Glover (Seth Carr), to settle the estate and sell the house. Upon arriving at the house, Glover finds the basement contains security camera screens, and there is a remote that controls everything in the house. Hours later, Eddie (Billy Burke) and his team, Peter (Mark Furze), Sam (Levi Meaden), and Duncan (Richard Cabral), break into the house, but Shaun is locked outside. Peter chases after Shaun into the woods, she fights him and manages to knock him unconscious after he hits his head on a rock, she then ties him up and gags him. Shaun runs back to the house and speaks to the criminals on the intercom, Eddie says all they want is to find the safe containing $4 million, which Sam learned about from sleeping with Isaac's assistant. They have 90 minutes before the security company calls the police, they want the money immediately, Duncan is bloodthirsty and thinks the family should be killed, as they have seen their faces, but Eddie is more relaxed about it. As Shaun tries to find a way into the house, the real estate agent Maggie Harris (Christa Miller) comes to the house with paperwork, Eddie greets her, saying Shaun is out getting groceries. But Maggie spots her car and purse, she becomes suspicious and decides to leave, before she can, Duncan attacks her and slits her throat, Shaun sees this, and Eddie and Sam chastise Duncan. Shaun notices the garage open, she gets her hands on several firecrackers and a knife, she sets off the firecrackers as a distraction and smashes the security lights, while the villains search for her, Shaun sneaks in to find the kids, telling Jasmine what to do to make sure she and Glover stay safe. With time running out, Shaun gets out as the villains return, Jasmine tells Eddie she knows where the safe is, she pulls back a tile on the wall, the safe is revealed hidden by the closet, however, only Peter knows the combination. The villains go outside, Shaun brings out Peter, holding a knife to his throat, knowing they need him, she demands that her children are let go, and they will leave together and let the criminals take the money. Eddie responds by shooting Peter, forcing Shaun to run back into the woods, Eddie takes a flash drive off a necklace that Peter was wearing. The flash drive contains a code, allowing them to open the safe, as they take the money out of it, the kids are tied up, and Duncan starts dumping kerosene everywhere, so they can light the place on fire. Shaun makes another attempt to save the kids, going onto the roof and coming down from the window above, but Duncan and Sam find her, Shaun manages to use the rope to swing down to the ground, while Sam falls from the roof and is killed hitting his head. Meanwhile, Jasmine manages to cut herself and Glover free using a shard of a broken lamp, Eddie struggles with them, Glover grabs his gun, shoots and misses, and they run outside. Shaun grabs Sam's keys, she and the kids run and make it to Sam's truck, Duncan comes up behind them, Shaun reverses and runs him over, but Eddie shoots at the truck and causes it to crash. Shaun and the kids run and manage to lock themselves in, but Shaun's husband Justin (Jason George) arrives, Eddie attacks him and makes his way back into the house. Eddie finds Shaun holding a lighter over the money bag, she has poured kerosene on it, she knows if he kills her, she will drop the lighter and he will lose what he came for. Eddie takes the cartridge out of his gun, Shaun lets him take the money, however, Duncan returns and stabs Eddie to death. Duncan goes after Shaun and threatens to rape her and Jasmine, but the daughter arrives to help her mother, there is a struggle between them all, before Duncan can do anything else, Shaun grabs the knife and stabs him dead. It ends with Shaun going outside to hold Justin and the children as the police arrive. Union does relatively well as the mother who will do whatever it takes to save her family, and Burke is interesting as the smooth but nasty criminal leader. The scenario is very similar to Panic Room, the twist being that the victim is trapped outside for much of the show, I would personally describe it as something like Home Alone meets Taken, it is predictable, but it does have enough tension and excitement to keep you going, an alright thriller. Worth watching!
Not going to get too much into the story but it's filled with clichés and it doesn't make sense. The only thing I would say if I got what I came for why over stay my welcome. $4 million is enough for me to vacate the premises. Hated that they made the father and the son characters soft in this movie. Even though the movie had a female protagonist they didn't have to demasculinized the male characters to make Union's lead character more heroic or her daughter. Overall horrible movie, your motive was to get rich and it just turned to a horror splash flick for no reason at all.
These 88 minutes never drag their heels long enough for us to get hung up on their myriad implausibilities. One of those low-expectation releases that’ll see you right if Infinity War remains sold out.
