This movie hits to every mother's nightmare. For her children to be taken from her. Shaun Russell goes to her father's house with her children. In the course of events she is caught up in a home invasion. Things go from bad to worse as her children get trapped inside with the bad guys. It becomes a battle of wits and determination. This suspenseful movie has lots of twist and turns. A good action pack adventure that reminds you, don't mess with mama.
Breaking In (3 out of 5 stars).

Breaking In is in perfect time to be released around Mothers Day, basically a movie were it shows the star power Gabrielle Union playing a mother of two, and will do whatever it takes to save her kids from four burglars. The film is not terrible or great but it is decent entertainment. It is predictable, cliché, and have a fair amount of thrills. I feel like the movie trailer was more exciting and thrilling than the film itself. Gabrielle Union did well playing a character that is like the female version of John McClane (from Die Hard movies). As she does not back down from the burglars that are holding her kids hostage.

The plot follows Shaun (Gabrielle Union) who is taking her two children Glover (Seth Carr) and Jasmine (Ajiona Alexus) to her father's mansion. After his sudden death, leaving Shaun to inherit his property. Once settled, she discovers the place to be a fortress with high security systems, cameras around every corner, and the place to be impenetrable. Once four criminals sneak into the place and locking Shaun out of her house. While her two children are being held hostage until the criminals led by Eddie (Billy Burke) find a safe. Shaun will do whatever it takes to get her children back even if it requires hunting one bad guy at a time.

It is a decent thriller. It could have been a whole lot worse than it is. There is a predictable script. Mother walks out of house to make a phone call and notices the garage was open which anybody could have walked in. And four unstable criminals with Eddie being the leader and finding this robbery to be difficult cause they thought the house was going to be empty. Then, there is one robber who is a young bleached haired guy who is unsure about going with this breaking in cause there are kids involved. Then, a mentally unstable tattooed guy who is trigger happy and wanting to murder even if it's their own crew. Then, the final robber who is the safe cracker.

Gabrielle Union did great playing the character. A mother with no stopping power. And sure, she is also a loving mother who was estranged with her father and her own family home. Billy Burke was a good menacing villain.

The movie is cliché. It is easy to see were the direction is heading. Like when the home invasion is happening. Mother is trying to get help. You get that visitor who shows up and nothing good happens from there. Shaun will have to do things her way. Take advantage of the home security system, cut the power, and take one guy out at a time. There are a few thrills. But do not expect any action packed scenes. It is entertaining but I feel like the movie trailer was exciting than the film itself.

Overall, Breaking In is a fair thriller film. Gabrielle Union was great at her stopping power as a mother who can take hits and be shot at. But will get back up to take the bad guys down. The plot is just a simple home robbery with a predictable concept with its clichés.

I will recommend this film as a rental or if you want to see a decent thriller in theatres.
The screenplay by Ryan Engle (“Rampage,” “The Commuter”) squanders its potential for emotional depth, making Breaking In a serviceable, but indistinct product.
