In short, the novels had an odd, aggressive, middlebrow sensibility to them that "The Toughest Indian in the World" blessedly lacks. Here Alexie reveals himself to be a more fearless writer than one might ever have imagined; the stories are bold, uncensored, raucous and sexy.
In fact, this new collection of stories is populated by one horny tribe of characters. Beginning with the opener, "Assimilation," in which a Coeur d'Alene woman impulsively sleeps with an Indian man just before meeting her white husband for dinner, these stories portray Indian men and women, and their white counterparts, as intricately sexual beings. But though Alexie delves deeply into their lives between the sheets, what motivates these people isn't a desire for simple recreational fun, but rather a painful emptiness that needs to be numbed or filled.
"She only wanted to be understood as eccentric and complicated," Alexie writes at the start of that story. Slowly, over the course of an awkward dinner and a subsequent traffic accident, he etches a portrait of the ties that simultaneously bind and separate this interracial couple.
"I get to write the articles designed to please the eye, ear and heart," complains the journalist narrator of the title story. Feeling repelled by his own assimilation into the blandly dutiful yuppie world, his one concession to his roots is his habit of picking up only Indian hitchhikers, a custom passed down from his own father. "If a distant figure happened to be white, my father would drive by without comment. That was how I learned to be silent in the presence of white people. . . . Indians just like to believe that white people will vanish, perhaps explode into smoke, if they are ignored enough times."
Over the course of the story, the narrator, who is straight, picks up a scarred Indian fighter, takes him to a hotel and ultimately has sex with him. What makes this so astonishing is that Alexie doesn't feel the need to tack on any kind of sexual epiphany: At the end of the story, the narrator is no more gay than he was at the start, and yet the attraction between these two men, on this particular night, seems apt and true.
Likewise, the romantic couple of another story make it clear that what people are craving these days (and in these stories) is simply love and understanding, that they can be seen and touched by someone, that their existence can be proven and endorsed by anyone around them.
"I aim to go on a nonviolent killing spree and I need somebody who will fall in love with me along the way," declares the bandit from "South by Southwest," one of the funniest stories of the bunch, and oddly, despite its surreal quality, one of the most haunting. "From the floor, a fat Indian man raised his hand. . . . I'll go with you, said the fat Indian. . . . I'm not a homosexual, but I do believe in love." From there they go racing around the country, raising a gun to happy people and demanding to know the secret of how they got that way.
Despite the melancholy strain expressed in each of these stories, Alexie sustains a consistently dark comic tone. He doesn't feel the need to instruct his readers in the details of contemporary American Indian culture, and why should he? The lives he portrays are so finely detailed, the tales so carefully woven, that even the most culturally sheltered reader is transported.
Alexie is also capable of distilling psychological insights into quick, snappy sentences. A woman observing her husband fighting for a dinner reservation: "Mary Lynn had seen that kind of rage in other white men when their wishes and desires were ignored." Or, from the bandit story: "Seymour wanted to be kind and he wanted to be romantic. . . . He was a white man, and therefore he could dream."
"The salmon are disappearing" is a phrase that appears several times throughout "The Toughest Indian in the World." Yet it becomes clear that it isn't just the salmon or the Indian that is endangered. These stories suggest that with them has gone any American capacity for understanding or love. But not the desire to find them.
