The year is 1960, while flying over the Atlantic ocean, average citizen Jack blacks out and awakens to discover that he is the sole survivor of a plane crash. Amidst the wreckage of his plane Jack spots and swims to a lighthouse and boards a Bathysphere that takes him deep within the ocean and into Rapture. Originally conceived as a utopia where a man would be entitled to all that he made without the interference of "parasites" by idealistic billionaire mogul Andrew Ryan. Rapture has since decayed and festered from the infectious effects of civil war and anarchy, brought about by the very ideals it citizens and it's leader embrace. Aided by a sympathetic smuggler and a rogue geneticist, Jack salvages gene altering chemicals transforming himself into a superhuman, and uses his newfound powers and abilities as well as an arsenal of weapons to fend off the vicious hordes of psychotic mutants, security robots and armored supersoldiers that resulted from Rapture's unrest while given the choice to either rescue or lethally harvest the genetic material from Rapture's only citizens with a chance: the 10 year old "Little Sisters". As Jack wanders through the condemning atmosphere of rapture, he treads towards a secret that for could shatter all that he has known forever.
In 1960, a lone survivor of a plane crash named Jack discovers an abandoned underwater utopia, only to find out that the mystery behind its creation is much more sinister than he first believed.
When a plane crashes, you find yourself the only survivor, and you enter a strange, semi-futuristic, retro underwater city. Welcome to Rapture(we hope you enjoy obvious Biblical references). Half a century ago, some of the greatest artists and scientists of the world decided to free themselves from the limitations of modern society. They built this place from Utopian ideals, and, completely unexpected, it didn't work out. The former inhabitants have gone mad from following their whims and getting "all they want"(not the only exploration of philosophy of this), and these Splicers make up most of your enemies(unfortunate, as they are pretty boring... superpowers and all). You can do what they did... alter your DNA with Plasmids, giving you abilities, literally at your fingertips. Incinerate, freeze, shock, use telekinesis to toss grenades back in the face of the thrower, etc. To get these, you have to get to the Little Sisters, eerie young girls who absorb the Adam(told ya... and the energy for them is called Eve), and either kill them or save them(for a smaller amount, at a promise of a reward). Why not merely pick up those large syringes they use and draw it directly? Uh... ooh, look, art deco in a video-game! ...wait, what? Guys, I think there's a reason this wasn't done sooner. OK, I don't mind the idea of using it period, however, why do so in one that is meant to be creepy(yes, this is slightly "off", not quaint, and yet it doesn't really have an effect on you)? It seriously takes you out of it(don't get me started on the intentionally goofy and cartoony stuff), and this never completely gets to be unsettling, in spite of building mood. Anyway, to get to these, you have to get past their wards, the understandably already iconic Big Daddies. Going up against them is one of the few fun things in this, along with the hacking(that you cannot possibly complain about there not being enough of... and at the same time, you don't have to do it if you don't want to... erm, when *did* this medium become a friggin' buffet?), that are essentially the mini-game "redirect the fluid flow through pipes". For being linear, this does have marvelous levels and I didn't stop enjoying seeing new areas, even when it goes on for too long near the conclusion(where it brings up issues that could be compelling if it wasn't too little and far too late, if some of the twists are cool). Part of the supposed appeal here is making choices and that mattering, and yet all you can really do is choose between three endings by your actions in this(that is one of the unusual show of guts that this does engage in) and what genetic specials to be carrying around(I swear, they were tossin' 'em at me!), since you can find in excess of the six you can use(don't get me started on the lazily done menus, where you for example can't even tell what subgroup is worth upgrading without going to a different machine). While the guns aren't bad, they almost all have the exact same ammo types. Fire, cold, electricity and regular... what's the point of having different ones? Yes, at its core, this is a mere FPS with one or two unusual features, and as such, it's in no way the best of its kind. A sequel in spirit to System Shock 2, that decade-old(!) product beats it with both arms tied behind its back. This arms you with a revolver, a shotgun, Tommygun, grenade launcher, chemical thrower(burn, brr, and zap), and crossbow(they can be upgraded, and you can actually see it, physically). Controls are relatively simple and it nearly always tells you what to press. One thing in this title's favour is that in place of researching is a camera that you take photographs with(to get better at taking out opponents), taking advantage of the leap ahead in technology. And yes, it certainly is attractive, visually and audibly. Voice acting is good(and yes, you find logs... they're just not that memorable). Filters, especially water, looks fantastic(if there are a ton of glitches... melt ice on the ceiling, and it won't come down, instead soaking into it as if it were the floor...). I don't know why this didn't equip you with a mini-map or a compass, because you badly need one or the other. Not that I'm sure where you got a map in the first place. It is a great choice that this severely limits things that weren't in what this is a sort of follow-up to. You can only carry so much money, that many bullets, bolts or the like, etc. Yes, you can find them almost anywhere and I never ran out of anything important(guys, the way you do it is make the availability low). Yeah, I know, I don't seem able to say much positive about this without caveats. It's just a remarkable disappointment and waste of potential. There's also no multi-player, if this can be forgiven on account of how story-driven it is(if the last one did still do it... sorry). The radio transmissions never seem to shut up, and bugs you if you go exploring(even though that's part of the point). What is with this current trend of handholding, of urging you to go on if you pause? This is also excessively streamlined, if it could be worse. You go up against security in the form of cameras(with a halo of light, meaning that you can figure out the angle they're coming from before you spot it, smart), flying bots and turrets(the latter using machine-guns or rockets), and all three can be turned over to your side. This is brutal, bloody and has a lot of disturbing content(if no gore and the violence is only moderate). I recommend this to fans of shooters, and those looking for something that makes them consider morality and ethics; anyone expecting depth anywhere else will be let down. 7/10
With the rage of casual gaming that has been going on 2k must have had a sh*t fit when they realizes one of there most expensive games was probably only appealing to the so called "Hardcore" demographic. And so in a sudden burst of madness they did every thing they could to make this game more accessible to the casual gamers. In effect ruining the core of what was supposed to make Bioshock so great.

Let me explain. The first Time I played this game was on Normal. The first couple of levels where great. With little money, little ammo and little health and scrounging for all those things, I was challenge and felt some of that atmosphere all the reviewer where talking about. Unfortunately the illusion that I was ever in any kind if danger was quickly taken away from me when a foe finally got the better of me. I had saved often and was just about to retrace my last steps when I suddenly materialized in a chamber. That's right you cant die… now you had a chamber like this in System shock too but it cost something and once you where out of that you did die. But not in Bioshock, you can die as much as you like making every boss and battle a piece of cake. Unfortunately if invincibility still doesn't do it for you, later in the game you can buy ammo and health every where and money is never very hard to come buy… the first time I completed Bioshock I felt a bit of a disappointment in the fact it had every thing a great game needed, great story, great depth in game play, great graphics and great controls. it was just all made way to easy for the player. And thus I as a gamer that wants to be challenged felt let down a bit.

I decided the second time I was going to play it would be on Hard. And I would not use any of the vending machines that sell ammo or health and I was going to reload my last save if I died there by countering all the things I don't like about Bioshock. I am pleased to say that now it is one of the greatest games I have ever played.

It is unfortunate that I had to take matters in my own hands to make it so, but on the other hand I should be pleased that any wimp can complete the game and enjoy the greatness that is Bioshock.

I just hope that in Bioshock 2 they think about the "Hardcore" gamers and take out all the things that make the game to easy on the hard level.

1960 The Atlantic Ocean. Yes there is a Bioshock 2, and Bioshock: Infinite was announced that acts as a prequel. Yes, there are three endings.

It depends on how you dealt with every Little Sister.

You get the Good Ending if you don't harm any little sisters.

You get the Bad Ending if you harvest some of the little sisters.

You get the Worse Ending if you harvest all of the little sisters. a5c7b9f00b
