Matt Brody is a 2-time Olympic champion swimmer. However, due to drug and alcohol problems he has fallen from grace, to the point that he now has to perform community service as part of a plea deal for an offense. He will serve his time as a lifesaver at Emerald Bay lifeguard station, run by the no-nonsense Mitch Buchannon. Brody soon discovers that his celebrity status will earn him no favours. Meanwhile, people are dying in mysterious circumstances in Emerald Bay and Buchannon and his lifesaving team investigate. The occurrences may be linked to a nearby property development.
I was expecting to hate this movie. None of the jokes in the trailers made me laugh, and the cast looked like they were chosen for their appearance rather than their acting. After watching the movie I can say its better than I thought. Not great, but fine. Some jokes work others don't. Sometimes the tone doesn't always work; there are parts where its stupid, parts where it tries to be more serious, and parts where it tries to be more self aware and it doesn't always work. The acting is mostly good. The stand outs are The Rock and Zack Efron, they also have the most to work with. As for the supporting players, Jon Bass probablystands out as the comic relief. You may be wondering about the women. Alexandra Daddario has a couple good comedic moments. Kelly Rohrbach and Ilenesh Hadera were fine although they didn't have much screen time. The characters have little depth but like I said decent acting helps. The weak link is Priyanka Chopra. SPOILER <br/><br/>If you've seen the trailer you know she is the villain. Unfortunately while she tries to come off as seductive it ended up being more awkward. Also, the plot and character arcs are very predictable. Still Baywatch is entertaining enough to satisfy summer moviegoers. I give it 6/10 for being far better than I expected ( I was expected a disaster along the lines of the recent "comedies" Chips and Snatched.
this film breaks the cardinal sin of movie making. it's boring. with a capital B. it looks like a reworking of the TV show, but it's really just nothing. there are four credited writers and 15 credited producers/executive producers, including the rock. don't blame him. I know he can do a good job with decent material. look at last years' "central intelligence". this movie fails anyway you look at it.
Johnson and Efron possess impressive muscles, but the performers have never done as much heavy lifting as they do here. And to their credit, they succeed to some degree.
