When an old enemy, the Cylons, resurface and obliterate the 12 colonies, the crew of the aged Galactica protect a small civilian fleet - the last of humanity - as they journey toward the fabled 13th colony, Earth.
The second war against the Cylons is over, and The Twelve Colonies have been destroyed. Now Commander Adama of the Battlestar Galatica and President Laura Roslin lead a ragtag fleet of refugees in a supposed search for the fabled lost thirteenth colony, Earth. However, the dangers they face are many, which compound an already difficult situation. In addition to the Cylons hunting and attacking the fleet in space and their infiltrator units carrying out sabotage--even as their former unwitting pawn, Gaius Baltar, helps in the hunt for them while hiding both his own guilt and the strange presence that haunts his every thought--the fleet also faces internal political conflict in which the rabble-rousing figure Tom Zarek is merely the loudest dissenting voice, not to mention recurring shortages of food, water, and even oxygen. In the midst of these trials, however, clues begin to appear to suggest that Adama's bluff about finding Earth might hold more truth than anyone could have guessed.
As someone who wasn't a real big fan of the original series, I have to say it was a LOT more entertaining this time around. In the original the special effects and "look" of the production was just as cheesy as the original Star Trek series, at a time when George Lucas was wowing us on the big screen. It didn't hold up. This time around though, the miniatures and effects are spot-on, and I hope for big things for this series. I have already watched all of the mini-series and season 1 and will be getting the season 2 DVD soon. Not to be missed! The inclusion of Richard Hatch in the cast makes it really great for those of us who are just accustomed to having an original cast member included as an homage to the first production back in '78. Both these DVDs are a must-have for any Sci-Fi fan.
I totally agree with previous comments regarding this last and final year of Battlestar Galactica. The first two seasons were so excellent that I could hardly wait for seasons 3 & 4 to come out on DVD. Sadly - the peak of the series was Season 2 – with everything going downhill from there. This is a case where writers so completely lost the story line – that – we – the viewers were left with nothing short of a Gordian Knot of puzzles and riddles at the end. At the end - I wasn't sure whether I had just finished watching a science fiction film – or – a religious film – purporting Intelligent Design. I had expected an ending – (perhaps) – along the lines of the Wachowski brothers' excellent trilogy – The Matrix – where - Baltar & Number (Caprica) 6 were – (perhaps) holographs – or – avatars. But – then - more questions than answers. In fact – there were no answers – just questions. If this were science – was this a case of parallel evolution – or – given the existence of an infinite number of "multi-verses" – a parallel universe? If this were science fiction – was this a case of human origins being the Cylons – in which case – evolution has come full circle? If this were religion – with a Divine Intelligence – micromanaging each and every nano-second – of - who lived – and – who died - - - was this a case of and "endless loop" of births and rebirths – for – creatures totally devoid of any free will? Were "futuristic visions" a case of an individual reliving the past – or – Intelligent Design – or – some sort of programming – genetic or otherwise? All said – this was a most disappointing fourth season – better left unmade. As a footnote: The beauty of Babylon 5 was: One writer – One vision – One thread – and – most importantly - no Gordian Knot left unraveled!

Cylons are humanoid robots created by mankind as servants and laborers. Eventually, they rebelled and declared war on their human masters. Miniseries - This 3 hour miniseries acts as a pilot for the weekly series and introduces the characters and situations. Season 1 - Contains 13 episodes. Season 2 - Contains 20 episodes. Season 3 - Contains 20 episodes. Battlestar Galactica: Razor - This 2 hour TV movie ( officially the first two episodes of Season 4 ) takes place during Season 2, with flashbacks to the miniseries and earlier, but should be viewed here. Season 4, Part 1 - Contains 10 episodes ( also known as "Season 4.0" on DVD ). Season 4, Part 2 - Contains 10 episodes ( also titled "Season 4.5" or "The Final Season" on DVD ) Battlestar Galactica : The Plan - This is a post-series prequel TV movie which depicted selected events of the miniseries and series from the Cylons point of view. There are also two spin-off prequels: Caprica - A 19 episode prequel series set 58 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica.
