December, 1944. The Nazis, in the face of the onrushing Allies, turned and pushed into the Ardennes Forest in Belgium and Luxembourg for what would be their last major offensive of World War II. During the Battle of the Bulge, as it is now called, they surrounded the town of Bastogne, Belgium, trapping the US Army 101st Airborne Division in the town. To make matters worse for the 101st, thick clouds covered the area for most of the battle. This prevented the Allies from providing air cover and air-dropped supplies to their troops on the ground. This film focuses on one squad of the 101st as they wait for the clouds to break.. Meanwhile, they must survive German spies in US Army uniforms, German artillery, winter weather, dwindling supplies, and the fear of being trapped by a hostile force.
We follow a band of American soldiers as they engage the Germans in a snowy, foggy winter near Bastogne in World War II. They're low on fuel, rations, and ammunition; the Germans are constantly encouraging their surrender via radio and leaflets, and most importantly, the pervasive thick fog makes movement and identification difficult and prevents their relief by Allied air support. This film focuses much more on the psychology and morale of the soldiers than on action footage and heroics.
William Wellman's tribute to the American soldiers who fought in the Battle Of the Bulge, Battleground, is, even today, a stirring film. That Wellman was himself a veteran, of the First World War, doubtless helped lend it an air of authenticity. He knew that war was not only hell but also annoying and uncomfortable; that it brings out not only the best and worst in people in general but also the best and worst in the same person. Robert Pirosh's award winning script doesn't delve too deeply into the characters' personal lives, and some have criticized the film for this. though as far as I'm concerned I see no reason why it should have.

As World War II movies go, this one's neither a flag-waver of the sort that came out during the war itself, nor is it a re-examination of the various issues raised during the war, as became the fashion later on. It occupies a middle ground, urging the viewer to admire the GI's who fought in the war for all they went through, offering just enough of a glimpse into their personalities so that we can, most of us, identify with them, and in this it succeeds splendidly.

Technically, Battleground is a marvel. Filmed entirely in Hollywood, it manages to capture the look and feel of a European winter with uncanny accuracy. I've seen movies filmed in Europe that looked less European than this one does. The acting is generally outstanding. Van Johnson plays the lead, or more properly has the largest role, and was a good choice for it, coming off, as he always did, as an average guy, not a macho one. Some of the blander actors,--Marshall Thompson, John Hodiak, Bruce Cowling--seem at times interchangeable, and are often hard to tell apart. James Whitmore stands out as a sergeant, and this was his first notable film role. He's very good, though as was usually the case with him, his hyper-virility seems to border on tenseness, as he seems determined to steal every scene he's in. Leon Ames is superb in his one scene. To me, Ames always had the air of a confidence trickster, as if he didn't mean a word he said. Here, he does. The actor's worldliness is perfect for his role as a frost-bitten minister, and he delivers his lines with measured brilliance.

Overall, an excellent movie, perfect for what it is, a product of Hollywood, made at a time when the studios reigned and the average American went to the movies at least once a week. It's good to keep this in mind when watching the film. This isn't personal film-making of the sort we see today. Wellman's approach to his material is just right, as the movie feels at times like a newsreel done on a more intimate level than usual, showing us the average soldier as a real person rather than just a guy with a rifle charging at the enemy or storming the beaches. In the end the movie almost seems to turn into a newsreel, with the camera pulling back, the soldiers losing their individuality as they march off the screen and out of sight, to the accompaniment of the then popular song, Sound Off! This is powerful stuff, gritty and with much heart.
Actual soldiers (paratroopers) from the 101st Airborne Division were hired as advisers, and, starred in this movie, to make sure 'every' detail was covered. I only wish they did that with "Battle of the Bulge" in 1965!?!?

This movie includes oldies-but-goodies like Van Johnson ("Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" and "The Caine Mutiny"); Ricardo Montalban ("Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan"); James Whitmore ("Planet of the Apes" and "The Shawshank Redemption"); James Arness as 'Jim' Arness ("Gunsmoke" and a US Army Veteran and Purple Heart recipient of Anzio during WW2); Richard Jaeckel ("The Dirty Dozen" and "Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid"); and, The Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division! :)

This is 'really' a great movie that even mentions some of the ordnance that Americans used during World War 2...like the 1903 Springfield rifle; the M1 Garand rifle; and, such techniques that were adapted by American soldiers who didn't expect what they got; but, as American soldiers...they adapted, overcame, and, survived!

This movie is not only a great movie, but, a "TRIBUTE" to all of the American Military, all over the world, then and now! :)

I love this movie!

MM/USN 1985-1993
