Los Angeles and other cities around the world are being bombarded by meteors that seem to be slowing down once they hit the earth's atmosphere. The earth is suddenly being invaded by space aliens that have landed off the shore of LA, and who begin killing everybody along the beach. The military is ordered into action. Marine Staff Sergeant Nantz (Aaron Eckhart), who was about to retire, is reassigned to a new platoon. The platoon, flown by chopper to the forward operating base at Santa Monica Airport, is being led by a new 2nd Lt. Martinez (Ramon Rodriguez). They are sent on a mission to rescue some civilians who are trapped at the police station within alien territory. They only have 3 hours to complete their mission and get out before the Air Force bombs that zone.
After a meteor shower around the world, the governments learn that it is actually an alien invasion and organize counter-attacks. In Los Angeles, the Marine Sergeant Michael Nantz is ready to retire after a great trauma in the past when he lost all the men under his command in a mission. However, his platoon is assigned to bring the civilians that are sheltered in the Police Department, in an area dominated by the aliens, back to forward operating base (F.O.B.) before the bombs drop on the city. Sgt. Nantz assists 2nd Lieutenant William Martinez and they have to accomplish their mission within three hours. The marines meet few civilians and survivors from other commandos and when they are ready to fly to the base, the helicopter with the wounded marines is shot down and crashes. Now the marines need to reach the base with the civilians through the destroyed streets and highways using a bus. Along their journey, the marines learn how to kill the invaders but only a few of them survive. When the mission is accomplished, Sgt. Nantz and the survivors decide to destroy the alien communication center and consequently their airborne force.
Battle: Los Angeles is just one of those springtime releases where the stupidity level is very high, but so is the fun meter. I have seen this movie twice and I enjoyed it twice. It's a stupid movie with lots of yelling and running around but there seems to be a sense of realism and grittiness to it and to each character and that is what I liked. This film is about aliens who come to invade Earth due to it's resources. A group of army fighters led by Staff Sergeant Nantz do their very best to try to protect Earth from being successfully invaded. The acting is decent, despite the amount of clichéd characters. Aaron Eckhart gives his character all he has and it works. Honestly, I could not seem to think what Michael Pena has to do with this movie. Even though he is inserted at random, I felt he did a good job. I could also tell the actors had fun with these roles and that is always good to hear in a movie. Overall, this is a decent sci-fi flick that could have been way worse. I think this movie is too heavily army based and some of the characters did not stand out to me but I liked the non-stop action, the alien designs, and just the fact I have gotten a fun time out of this movie. I rate this film 8/10.
The movie is offering you a real war action. No stupid things, no romance, no bullshit... Only solid action. Thats why i really liked that movie. The best thing in the movie is we never saw any god damn country leader. The movie reserves its name: "Battle" If you want to live action, watch it. If you are looking for a USA president who is saving the world, watch Independence Day and kiss Will Smith's ass. Or maybe you would like to see a popular idiot, so you can watch War of The Worlds and save Tom's pretty girl from the aliens. Or maybe you would like to kill yourself, so watch the Skyline and feel the pain in your brain. So as a result this movie is the best alien invasion movie i've ever seen. The other examples of this kind of movies are includes bullshit. If you want to feel action and feel the energy, go for it.
Not a single arresting image is found amid the sci-fi rubble, though unintentional laughs eventually arrive courtesy of a cornball motivational speech by Eckhart's hero.
