Filled with interesting information about sharks, including the unlikelihood of someone falling victim to a great white shark--1 in 37 million chances--and descriptions of two scientists who devote their lives to studying sharks, this is a good addition to the Scientist in the Field series. The text and photos show Greg Skomal and his crew as they track sharks off the Massachusetts coast, trying to understand their migratory patterns and contradict many of the myths about these creatures that make humans so fearful of their presence. Although most of the book focuses on Skomals work off Cape Code, the author and photographer also venture to Erick Higuera who works near Guadalupe Island, Mexico, and affords them the chance to dive in shark cages so they can see the creatures up close and personal. This is a well-written account of their adventures, highlighting the work these two scientists and others are doing to make sure there is still a place for sharks on this planet. Although Montgomery does mention the costliness of shark fin soup, which has made hunting for sharks a lucrative business, she doesnt go into great detail on that issue or the fact that while this species may be making a comeback, others are not. As usual, the text and photos kept me riveted, and I learned lots of nifty facts about sharks that I didnt know before reading the book. I wish there had been more to the text and more discussion of the possible effects of global warming and overfishing on these sharks. I did enjoy having maps of the sharks paths and the fact that they were named by the scientists, each of whom seemed to rejoice when they spotted old shark friends. Young readers might find it particularly interesting to note that much of the field work in this area is done during a few short months while interpreting the data happens later. As usual, any book in this series needs to become a part of a science classroom library.
