Very interesting account of what that life must have been like. It describes the time served by the author in the Mukti Bhaini (the guerrillas fighting to liberate Bangladesh in 1971). The account is probably one which military history buffs would get the best out of. It reminded me of similar personal accounts Ive read from World War 1, 2, Korea, and to a lesser degree Vietnam-- namely it has a conservative air about it, which takes the legitimacy of the fight as presumed (not difficult in the case of Bangladesh) and focuses on the technical aspects of war. What weapons were used and how, what tactics were used, what was the daily texture of experience like. This is like the way your grandpa tells you war stories. He just tells you what happened, and any emotional sensitivity is avoided, or lingers at the margins or between the lines. But if you are into this sort of book its a great one.It actually reminds me a lot of the Vietnam war in terms of the type of combat which the guerrillas were engaging in. The Bengali biome isnt that different from the Vietnamese one. Less hilly perhaps. I have to wonder what macrohistorical forces were at force which caused the jungle from Bengal to Vietnam to experience occupation and guerrilla warfare during the 1970s. Or maybe it is just a coincidence. Of course western powers and Indians *were* afraid of the communists taking control of the Mukti Bahani, so maybe in some alternative history the conflicts would have been more related than they are. But you do feel like over the course of a mere 170 pages you watch this rich city kid develop into a guerrilla fighter. There are some emotional moments, like when certain people die (no spoilers). It also gives you a sense of the character of the war, much of which is actually unstated in my reading. For instance, these guerillas were fighting in Sylhet, which was a portion of Bengal that was more supportive of Islamist politics and also had a lot of pro-Pakistani elements during the war (though it also provided the resistance with a number of key fighters as well). The local villagers are not normally trusted. The tension between bengalis and Syletis is there under the surface. The way the account is written as well, is not similar to how one write a modern account of war. The Pakistanis are dehumanized, (not in that they are described as subhuman, but in that they are only extremely rarely described with any sense of individuality or empathy) and the narrator doesnt find this problematic. This seems natural in war, but if a (post?)modern liberal western newspaper dissected such an account theyd probably find it tribalistic and savage. But there is an honesty to that which I appreciated, because that is how wars are fought esp against an invasive occupier. These two aforementioned points are ones which implicitly question the untarnished quality of the Bengali resistance, but 1) I dont think the author would claim that they did a perfect job. and 2) even with these implications of harshness taken into account, the reader still comes away with a pretty sympathetic view towards the Bengali militias. Its pretty amazing what they did with so little, and more especially with such little training organization. There was scarcely any central organization or organization between regions. Even different parts of the same attacking force didnt have radio communications. As the author himself claims, it shows that if a population is motivated enough, it can forge itself into a relatively poor, but adequate fighting force.Theres plenty more I could write on this book-- for instance I wonder if the fact that the rebels had so many students effected the war at all. Imagine if you took all the most destructive people from your college and signed them up into the military. And also. the author is pretty accepting of the fact that Indian support helped a lot during the war, but as usual Im left wondering-- what would have happened if they didnt intervene? I also have to wonder, does the author really think that the spirit of unity between Hindus and Muslims forged during the liberation struggle persisted? Or did it fade? And what would he think of post-independence Islamist politics? Who knows.
