While I did enjoy Jumanji, the story seems a bit incomplete and more like an outline (as though some, if not actually much of the details are missing). I did appreciate the rich and detailed illustrations, but wanted more information, more fleshed out characters and scenarios. Some might and with justification point out that the illustrations actually augment the sparseness of the text. That being said, I think some of my own issues are probably because I have always been an exceedingly textual person, that while a visual learner, I think in words and not in pictures. I do enjoy illustrations in books, but always tend to regard these as more of a supplemt and an addition, rather than the main or even a main focus (which is probably why I do not really enjoy wordless picture books or graphic novels all that much either). And with Jumanji, there is just not enough text to satisfy me personally (I finished the book and was basically thinking Is that it?).I also wonder if having seen the movie before reading the book might have made me expect a longer and more involved, nuanced story. However, I believe that even if I had not seen the movie, I still would have found the narrative somewhat incomplete and lacking, with simply not enough information and certainly not really that sense of danger a jungle adventure like the one described in the story and by the illustrations demonstrates or hints at (and while I do like the illustrations, I think they would have been better with a bit of colour, but I tend to think that with most of van Allsburgs work).
