Filho de D. Afonso II e de D. Urraca, D. Afonso nasceu entre 1212 e 1217. Após a morte de seu pai, este «filho segundo», ainda jovem, deixou o país, aparecendo alguns anos mais tarde em França, na corte de sua tia materna — Branca de Castela, rainha daquele reino — e de seu primo, o futuro São Luís. Aí se casou, tornando-se, por essa via, conde de Boulogne. De defensor e administrador do reino (1246-1247), transformou-se no legítimo rei de Portugal (1248-1279), logo após a morte prematura de seu irmão. O seu reinado situa-se num momento-charneira do Portugal medieval. Terminada a Reconquista, o chefe do bando guerreiro dava lugar ao gestor e organizador do território. Deixando a sua marca na conquista definitiva do Algarve, essa conquista custou-lhe, sobretudo, uma larga batalha política e diplomática com o rei de Castela, D. Afonso X, que soube levar a bom termo. Procurou recompor o desgovernado reino do irmão repovoando-o, fundando novas povoações e estimulando as suas bases económicas.
