This book annoyed me to no end. The author tells the story of her life as a female Yankee fan and the love-hate relationship she has with the team. I should identify, right? My kind of girl?Ugh, no. For one thing, I hate when people proclaim themselves the worlds biggest [insert team here:] fan. I particularly hate when people proclaim themselves the worlds biggest Yankee fan (and no, its not because I think I am).The brand of fan-dom that she demonstrates in the book is one I find particularly obnoxious. She shares several anecdotes in which she throws stuff at the TV or rants and raves at her husband because the Yankees are playing poorly. I just know she would be a miserable person to watch a game or even just to talk baseball with. No one wants to listen to the fan who throws the team under the bus after some tough losses.At one point in the 2007 season, she writes an op-ed for The Times divorcing the Yankees. Um, who are you, and who cares? Then she decides shes going to write a book about her fandom. Shes able to sell it to her publisher and proceeds to spend the back half of the season traveling from city to city to watch the Yankees play. (Aw, youre being paid to do a baseball tour? Boo hoo!) And then she whines about not being able to get interviews with the Yankees for this book. (Boo hoo again! Maybe you shouldnt have shot your mouth off in the Times!)She is definitely one of those spoiled Yankee fans who gives the rest of us a bad name. They cant win every game, they cant win every championship, so grow up. Watching your team lose isnt fun, but recognize that Yankee fans were totally lucky to enjoy such a miraculous run in the late 90s. Recognize that a glut of high-priced talent doesnt win championships; the right combination of talent, character and luck does. In the end, she tries to redeem herself by sharing that her love of the Yankees was renewed at this end of a season in which the Yankees lost in the first round of the playoffs. Too bad she already lost me.Its unfortunate that I read this after finishing the Joe Torre-Tom Verducci book about Torres time with the Yankees, which provides significant insight into the circumstances that created the 2007 team and influenced that seasons outcome. Her lame, overly emotional analysis of the season is ridiculous in comparison.Its also possible that Im jealous that she got paid to write a book about being a Yankee fan. Perhaps. Regardless, I have no interest in watching a game with her.
