On New Year's Eve, inside a police station that's about to be closed for good, officer Jake Roenick must cobble together a force made up cops and criminals to save themselves from a mob looking to kill mobster Marion Bishop.
On a snowy New Year&#39;s Eve in Detroit, the staff at an old police station are celebrating the last night before it is decommissioned when a prison bus carrying a powerful mobster is forced to stop there. Unfortunately, a team of crooked cops are out to silence him and will stop at nothing to storm the station and kill everyone inside ...<br/><br/>It&#39;s very pleasant that somebody wanted to remake John Carpenter&#39;s Assault On Precinct 13, for my money the best low-budget seventies cop thriller, and whilst this version isn&#39;t nearly as good, it&#39;s still an extremely enjoyable movie. It has several good things going for it; the snowstorm setting is great, there&#39;s an excellent score by Graeme Revell (and a nifty Assault rap by KRS-1) and it has the gritty urban feel of the original. Most importantly, James DeMonaco&#39;s script strikes the right balance between retaining the original idea and taking it in different directions - this movie takes out the murdered girl subplot, replaces the ganglords with corrupt policeman whose careers are at stake, throws in a traitor-in-the-midst question and extends the action outside the police station for the finale. This is all good stuff - remakes should always be different, otherwise what&#39;s the point ? The cast are terrific - Fishburne particularly shines in the choice role of gangster Bishop (the name of the heroic cop in the original), but DeMatteo, Leguizamo and rapper Rule are all very good, and it&#39;s nice to see old pro Dennehy (who&#39;s played more cops than I&#39;ve had hot dinners) still at the top of his game. There are some things I don&#39;t like in here - the photography wavers between good and stupid (especially in an unnecessary prologue), Byrne&#39;s character is a bit of a bland stock-villain and the action could use some trimming, but how can I complain about anyone remaking the work of the greatest and most underrated filmmaker of all time ?
Assault On Precinct 13 is a non-stop action flick about an old police station that is closing down on New Year&#39;s Eve with only two cops and a secretary inside. Marion Bishop, a cop killing gangster, is being transported to a maximum security prison, but the weather is too bad, so the transport stops at precinct 13 to keep him there until the storm subsides. When it is learned that Bishop is staying there, a S.W.A.T. team made up of crooked cops head to precinct 13 to take Bishop down before he can testify against them, and they don&#39;t intend on leaving survivors.<br/><br/>The plot to this updated remake is more complicated than the original, and it makes it fun. You have to look at it as a different movie, because they&#39;re both good for different reasons. The acting is good in this movie, aside from Ja Rule who should never touch another film. The action is non-stop and exciting. Everything in the movie leads up to a fairly good twist ending. This movie is definitely worth the fee to rent.<br/><br/>8/10
For what it is, Assault on Precinct 13 delivers. It's not great art, but, for B-movie fans and those looking for a mid-winter jolt of energy, it's good fun.
