BONUS | Hentai Terminology 101 (EXTREMELY NSFW)
Hi all! This is a podcast adaptation of a panel we've been giving for the past 2 years about the kinds of words you encounter when reading hentai (and much more). As you're listening to the podcast, be sure to check out this handy-dandy guide we've put together with visual representations of what we're talking about in each section. All of the images used here are sourced directly from pixiv.net, and you can mouse over every one to see what it's illustrating, and click on them to go to the page/artist it was sourced from (which we highly suggest you do).
In case this was not abundantly clear in the title, the entirety of this post is VERY NSFW and contains some pretty graphic stuff. Turn back now if you aren't into that.
Short for hentai seiyoku, it originally meant any unusual (“hen”) perversion. The term was popularized in Japanese psych journals in the early 1900s and then co-opted by perverse magazine authors. It’s important to note that hentai does not describe a genre in Japanese like it does in English. In Japan, pornorgraphy is normally donated as eromanga, or adult manga.
Ahegao is the slang term for "O-face", or the face someone makes during orgasm. It's usually characterized by crossed eyes and an open mouth/lolling tongue, with associated bodily fluids running down the face for full effect. Etymology-wise, the アヘ is read “a-he”, and the 顔 is the common kanji for face, read “gao”. Put them together, and you can see where we're going with this. Often seen in conjunction with the ahegao is the ダブルピース, or double peace.
This is almost assuredly one you've heard before. It translates to "Absolute Territory", and refers to the area of skin between the bottom of the skirt and the top of kneesocks/stockings. It comes from the term Zettai Kyoufu Ryouiki, which originates from everyone's favorite anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, originally referring to the AT Field or "Absolute Terror" force-field that the Angels and Evangelion units produce.
These two terms end with the same phrase: Dashi (出し), which is made of the kanji 出 (out/going out) and し. The Naka (中) and Soto (外) part make the rest self explanatory: naka means inside and soto means outside. So, it follows that nakadashi is finishing inside and sotodashi is finishing outside! As far as encountering these terms in the wild goes nakadashi is incredibly common, but outside of picking your choice in an eroge you won't hear sotodashi too often.
Another term you've probably heard before. Bukkake comes from the verb bukkakeru, which means to splash or cover something with a liquid. The use of it in a hentai context is pretty self-explanatory, but its use isn't limited to just sex: bukkake udon is a popular kind of udon dish in Japan, with a bunch of stuff piled on top of the noodles.
The full moon. In reference to the butt, the descending order of polite to vulgar terms is oshiri->shiri->ketsu.
The thighs, and also an incredibly fun thing to say. Coming from futo (太) meaning fat or plump, and momo (もも) meaning peach. So it follows that thighs are a "fat peach".
The vagina or pussy (almost always the latter in translation). Manko is an informal, vulgar slang term and would never be used officially or in a medical sense.
Another vulgar slang term, this time in reference to the dick or penis. The dick can also be called a million other things, most hilariously musuko 息子 (son). If you've ever been watching Gintama and heard bleeped words, it's probably been this or manko.
The title says it all! This is when you can see the butt cheeks from looking on from the front. The visual aid will be your best friend in this case.
This is a big one: the tiddy. They're usually referred to by "oppai" which is probably a term you've heard before, but you can also say "mune" to refer more to the chest itself or just be more reserved. Just like every language, there’s a ton of ways to describe honkers in Japan. They’re all spelled with ☓乳, where ☓ is a kanji describing their size and 乳 is for boob. You'll see some examples in the next section.
Small or flat. Can also be called pettanko.
Big. The kyo is the same one as in Shingeki no Kyojin.
Huge! Literally explosive breasts. Baku could be from bakuhatsu for “explosion” or bakudan for “bomb”.
Situations in which you can see the underside of the breast. Shita is the word for "under" and chichi is another slang term for boobs, literally "titty".
Sei is short for seira or "sailor", and fuku is a generic and common word for clothes. Originally seifuku referred to the stereotypical sailor school uniform, but can now refer to just about any uniform.
Mizugi is the generic word for swimsuit (one piece, bikini etc), while sukumizu refers specifically to the standard school-issue swimsuit you often see in media set in high school or middle school.
Mega is the word for "eyes"! This one kind of explains itself.
Shima is the word for stripes, and pan is short for pantsu or "panties". Thus, striped panties!
This translates literally to "after sunburn".
Meco is another slang term for vagina, and suji is specifically a "line of fiber".
We're certain that Japan has the best word for masturbation out of all the languages. Onani comes from the Book of Genesis chapter 38, referring to Onan, the second son of Judah. Onan was slain by god for pulling out too early and spilling his seed on the ground. Early Jewish and Christian views interpreted the passage to mean that masturbating is bad.
These two work the same way as nakadashi and sotodashi. 足 (ashi) is the kanji for foot or leg, and 手 (te) is the kanji for hand.
This is a fairly common phrase outside of hentai mostly because it's seen as somewhat of a childish term for peeing, usually what kids would say to their parents, i.e. "I need to wee-wee". The term omorashi is another in this specific category and refers to the act of having an "accident" or wetting oneself. It can also refer to the specific fetish subculture of liking to either wet yourself or watch someone wetting themselves.
Oshikko (The best possible example of it)
Pai is the shortened version of oppai, or breasts, and zuri means to rub against or between. Paizuri is technically a part of irrumatio.
Irrumatio comes from the same latin term, and means thrusting the penis between anything that isn't boobs. Usually means between the thighs or through the armpit, though can also refer to stuff like facefucking.
Osananajimi - 幼なじみ
"Childhood Friend"
Any non-blood related family, usually through marriage or adoption.
From English "gal", and it has a ton of different meanings. A lot of people think the standard ganguro/kogal stereotype first, but a gyaru is usually a girl who doesn't subscribe to the usual definition of Japanese attractiveness. This can include dyed hair, glitzy fingernails, a modified seifuku, or an unbuttoned top.
Netorare is almost always abbreviated as NTR. Cuckolding is a term taken from the cuckoo bird and its mating habits, where the dominant male will force a less dominant male to look after its female's eggs. The human version isn't much different, where a more alpha dude has sex with a less strong dude's girl as an act of dominance, sometimes even in front of him. This is an especially difficult concept to illustrate simply, so if our example doesn't do it for you just search the NTR tag on Fakku and you'll get an eyeful.
Loli comes from the novel Lolita by Russian author Vladimir Nobokov. Refers to a "young-looking girls", and this is key because it's a sort-of trope that loli characters can either be their age or thousands of years old, but look the same.
This is the shortened version of the word shotacon, which itself is short for shotaro complex describing an attraction to young boys. It's a reference to Shotaro Kaneda, protagonist of a famous 1950s manga called Tetsujin 28-go.
These are both fairly controversial subjects in 2018 and can exist within a severely grey moral area, but it should be noted that they're both technically legal in the US as long as they're not based on actual kids, and we figure since this is supposed to be as academic a presentation as possible, if you're going to be looking up hentai online it's better to be knowledgeable about this stuff than not.
Short for joshichuugakusei, literally "female middle school".
Short for joshikousei, literally "female high school".
Both of these are used as hentai tags online all the time, and below you'll find the covers of two well-known magazines that cater to JC and JK specifically, Juicy and Comic Koh. You'll notice that each of their names are representative of the type of content they serve up- Juicy sounds like JC in Japanese, and Koh is short for the kousei in joshikousei.
This is another pretty common term but not many people in the west know that Yaoi is an acronym for yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi which means "no climax, no point, no meaning". "Yaoi" has kind of fallen off as the given name for this genre in the west mostly because of the unfortunately negative (and homophobic/anti-women) connotations attached to it, so most of the cool kids are calling it "boys' love" or "BL" for short nowadays.
Yuri comes from the Japanese word for the white lily, which in the Japanese language of flowers symbolizes purity and chastity. Unlike the whole "yaoi/BL" name debate, Yuri is the accepted and most widely used name for this and you'll almost never hear "girls' love" or "GL".
If you're going to be reading BL, these are terms you absolutely need to know. Seme comes from the verb semeru which means to attack, and Uke comes from the verb ukeru which means to receive. These are sometimes translated as "top" and "bottom" but we prefer the more professional "dom" and "sub" for "dominant" and "submissive" in modern western fetish parlance. Riba comes from the English word reversible and refers to a "switch", or a character that can be both seme and uke. Usually the trope is that the Riba is a seme with one character and an uke with another. It's important to note that seme and uke are used exclusively when referring to BL in Japanese and would almost never be used to refer to roles within an actual gay couple, but we'll get to those terms in just a second.
Tachi and Neko are similar if not essentially interchangeable with seme and uke, with some key differences. They can be used both in reference to a real-life gay relationship and also to one in BL or geikomi (gay comics, a term you'll learn in the next section). Originally these two terms started as parlance in the Japanese lesbian community, which is why they're often associates with yuri as well. Tachi and Neko can also sometimes be used to describe more the emotional aspects of each role than the physical positions. As far as etymology goes, it's a little less clear than Seme and Uke. For Tachi, the best guess is the "tachi-yaku", the leading actor in a kabuki play. Neko is most likely named after the Japanese word for cat - representing the shy, timid side of cats, anyway.
Bara literally means "rose" in Japanese (not unlike how yuri refers to the lily) and is a broad term that describe gay porn made by gay men, for gay men (as opposed to yaoi/BL, which is usually made for women by women). It arose in post-war Japan in the 1950s from magazines like Barazoku (literally "rose tribe") and ADONIS, and was also a popular slang term for gay men during that period. Bara manga can also be called geikomi, or "gay comics". Bara is often much more realistic and commentative than any other kind of hentai or eromanga, commenting on social issues facing gay men in Japan. Nowadays bara features big, burly men with notable muscles and oftentimes body hair.
This is more of an aside than anything, but we absolutely couldn't talk about bara without mentioning its most prolific author and artist, Gengoroh Tagame. Tagame is an openly gay mangaka who is easily the most influential bara, geikomi and BDSM artist from modern Japan and one of the most influential in the world. He's known for a 30+ year career drawing gay erotica but has more recently received acclaim for his all-ages series My Brother's Husband and Our Colors. Basically, if Osamu Tezuka is often considered the "manga no kami-sama" or "god of manga", then Tagame is the "geikomi no kami-sama" or "god of gay comics".
Josou is the act of crossdressing. In spoken Japanese Otokonoko means boy, and it is normally written as 男の子, with the 子 being ‘son’. When referring to a crossdressing boy it’s written 男の娘, using 娘 for daughter, but pronounced the same. Otokonoko (in the crossdressing context) is normally translated as "trap", and there's a lot of baggage that comes with that term despite the fact that it is an accurate translation. The fact is, "otokonoko" and "trap" both have culturally negative connotations and thus can be considered real, hurtful slurs by members of the queer and trans communities. Knowing this, it's ultimately up to each individual to determine what they want to engage with in this realm, but you can rest assured "trap" is not a word you'll ever hear us using, and again if you're going to be searching out and engaging with the hentai community online this is something everyone should be aware of.
Kemono is the word for beast and mimi is the word for ears! This one is supremely simple, and also applies to everything regardless of gender. Fox, cat, wolf, bear boys and girls, if it's a beast and it's got ears, they can be put on a person and it can fall under this category.
This is another one that's almost entirely self-explanatory. Kemo is obviously from kemono and homo is taken from the English word "homosexual", denoting the gay stuff. You'll find mostly bara-centric art in this tag online.
The literal translation for futanari is "dual form", meaning hermaphroditism or a character that has both sets of genitalia. This is the true definition of futanari or "futa" in Japan however recently and especially in the west, futa has become associated with women who have or somehow grow or receive dicks without the necessary requirement of having both sets of privates. Also, for reasons that are beyond us, the dicks are almost always HUGE.
For our final bonus section, let's take a look at some memes and trends that started in the real world and made their way into hentai artist communities online.
Jiga is self-portrait, dori is the verb to take (a photograph). This one is interesting because it’s the opposite the normal trend - セルフィー (serufi) is used normally even though it’s an English loanword, whereas the “proper” Japanese jigadori is used only for erotic means.
This is an internet phenomenon inspired by an image posted by Tawawa on Monday creator Kiseki Himura on twitter, in which the main character of his image series is balancing her phone on her boobs. The challenge started first in real life, and then spread to 2D.
Literally translated as "The Sweater that Kills Virgins", it was originally popularized in a series of images circulated on Japanese twitter in 2016 labeled "Clothes that Kill Virgins". The trend quickly spread to Chinese social media and exploded from there, eventually making its way into 2D art like all these things eventually do. Much like Rule 34, there's a virgin killer sweater rule out there that says if you have a favorite character, there's art of them in a virgin killer sweater out there somewhere.

Is there a word for hentai where you know girls are wearing plasters on their nose what's the name of it
In NTR/Cuckoldry men don't do other men's girls as an act of dominance, they are not forcing anyone to anything. It's the chick who forces her man into it and it's her act of dominance/manhate.
Is there a term for like, internal cumshot? Like an x-ray thing?? I'm not sure what it's called and I was trying to google search it because I'm learning to draw yaoi and stuff so I was wondering if there was a term for it.
Anyway, I've learn so much Japanese terms today! Didn't know about The Tawawa Challenge untill now lol
I came searching for the word or sound they typically make when orgasming. Something like "Itai" or something. Idj
They say "ikou" which means I'm cumming
Thanks for the great info.

I've been into the game for five years now but I know only like ten terms so far.
Responding to "WASD", I definitly did.
Hey so heads up, you've got a bit of an error in your article.
You're actually looking at the wrong law for this. The one that requires it to be realistic or based on child victims is 18 U.S. Code §2252A :Certain activities relating to material constituting or containing child pornography." The law that covers lolicon and shotacon is "18 U.S. Code § 1466A - Obscene visual representations of the sexual abuse of children." ( https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1466A )
1466A, AKA the Protect Act of 2003 is a vague, stupidly written law that has so far not had any clear ruiling striking it down. US v Hadley and US v Whorley seemed to rule that part of the law was overbroad but convicted them anyway because the court found the overboard sections redundant since they found the work obviously obscene. US v Dean rejected the earlier ruiling stating they didn't find the law overbroad at all. There's been a number of different cases that have been prosecuted including prisoners locked up in prison making drawings in prison.
So again, technically illegal, but it's almost never prosecuted. The same way copyright infringement is technically illegal but people do it on a daily basis.
Thats why agehao so popular https://hentaisea.com/genre/ahegao/
No "kuri"? As in chestnut =clitoris?... this is some fethises too. No tentacle? No gore? Vore?
wow this was very exciting to take in, cant wait to try my best with some cute japanese irl anime girls next summer haha
Is there a term for a group of girls? Because when looking up group on image sites it usually leads to orgies instead of a literal group of girls.
That sub-genre of hentai can be referred to harem, in which a normal guy is surrounded by a group of excited and
