Broadway gambler Gloves Donahue wants to find who killed the baker of his favorite cheesecake. He sees nightclub singer Leda Hamilton leaving the bakery. When her boss Marty's partner Joe is murdered, Leda and her accompanist Pepi disappear. It turns out that beneath all the mystery is a gang of Nazi operatives planning to blow up a battleship in New York harbor.
Runyonesque Broadway gamblers turn patriotic when they stumble onto a cell of Nazi saboteurs.
If you can overlook the silly plot for the sake of enjoying a cast that includes Bogart, Peter Lorre, Conrad Veidt and Judith Anderson--and don't expect too much--you might enjoy some of the shenanigans going on here as gambler Bogart and his cronies try to tear the lid off a Nazi spy ring. Some of the dialogue is amusing and on target, but too much of the humor is on the level of a Bowery Boys movie as are the shootouts with Nazis and gangsters in assorted New York settings that look like leftover sets from old Warner films.

Bogey's pals include newcomers Phil Silvers and Jackie Gleason, both given little to do at this phase of their careers. The humorous quips are constant no matter how serious matters get and supposedly tell us not to take any of the proceedings seriously--which is easy in this case. As a nightclub singer, Kaaren Verne still shows traces of the mysterious accent she had in "Kings Row" except when she sings--a sure sign of dubbing?? She appears ill at ease most of the time, especially when performing in the club and seems an odd choice for a co-starring role with Bogey. Her career went nowhere after this.

The auction scene--where Bogey has to be the highest bidder in order to gain access to an adjoining room--is reminiscent of a similar scene from Hitchcock's 'North by Northwest'. In Hitch's film it was staged for greater effect with wit, sophistication and a touch of humor. Nevertheless, Bogart is at his best in this particular scene, his first encounter with Conrad Veidt and Judith Anderson.

It never rises above B-picture quality due to its talky script which drags things out for an interminable one hour and forty minutes that seems more like two hours. William Demarest and Frank McHugh are given thankless side-kick roles that become irritating after awhile.

Not one of Bogey's best and a curiosity piece more than anything else under Vincent Sherman's slick direction. Still, given the quality players involved, it stirs interest from the cast alone with Veidt, Lorre and Anderson (looking glamorous for a change) particularly enjoyable to watch.
This is a comical crime story directed by Vincent Sherman. The black & white atmosphere of a gangster film prevails. Humphrey Bogart plays a gambler/wise guy that gathers some muscle from a gang of 'enforcers' to take on the local branch of the Third Reich. Bogart is upset about the murder of the baker of his favorite cheesecake. The wise guys end up making a shambles of a Nazi spy ring. Comedy bits filter the fisticuffs.

Star studded cast helping Bogart includes: Peter Lorre, William Demarest, Jane Darwell, Jackie Gleason, Phil Silvers, Wallace Ford and Judith Anderson. Conrad Veidt is outstanding as the Nazi ring leader.
