On March 21, 1963, the inmates and guards at Alcatraz prison mysteriously disappear. To cover up the problem, the government reports to the public that the prison has been closed because of unsafe conditions. A secret government unit was set-up to find the prisoners. Now, in the present-day, the inmates begin returning - unaged and unaware of where they have spent the missing decades - and continue their criminal ways. They are acting out of character and appear to be searching for specific objects. A federal agent employs a police officer and a conspiracy theory novelist to help track them down.
Switching between eras, Alcatraz focuses on the Alcatraz prison, which was shut down in 1963 due to unsafe conditions for its prisoners and guards. The show's premise is that both the prisoners and the guards disappeared in 1963 and have abruptly reappeared in modern-day San Francisco, where they are being tracked down by a government agency.
This is a standard police procedural attempting to differentiate itself with the gimmick of Alcatraz prisoners suddenly disappearing, leading to the closure of Alcatraz, and then reappearing in modern day times and committing crimes. Sadly every episode follows the exact same plot sequence with no overarching storyline, just a series of episodes where a prisoner reappears and commits whatever felonies they were once imprisoned for. There are time shifts from modern day to when the prisoners were originally incarcerated at Alcatraz throughout each show to fill out the story of the particular prisoner for that episode.

I had high hopes but this is just another police procedural and pales in comparison to some of the better shows on TV that actually build characters that you can feel some empathy for (Southland, Justified). The CSI formula has obviously been successful with a large number of viewers and this show is not much different other than the slight twist mentioned above. Not a bad way to spend an hour but doesn't hold my attention.
This is the second Lost-type show to spin up this year and it's not the best. It borrows heavily from cop/buddy movies ("He killed my partner! I want revenge!"), Prison Break, Quantum Leap, and typical present day Vancouver syfy/horror serials for the pre-teen bunch. The characters, especially the escaped criminals, are more like comic book caricatures than real people. It uses the same techniques as Lost and Once Upon a Time to slowly reveal its mysteries. Unfortunately it doesn't have any profound or compelling theme motivating the story, like redemption or the nature of good and evil in people. The acting in the regular cast is good, partially because most of the actors (Neil and Garcia) have already played characters exactly like the ones they're doing here. The main problem with the show is that, like in Prison Break, each new tidbit of the big mystery they reveal makes it seem just that much more cheesy and far-fetched, instead of inspiring or enlightening. It's just not special.
