The former model, who made her name as the lover of Richard Chamberlain’s Catholic priest in Eighties mini-series The Thorn Birds, says starlets should accept that audiences have a right to see them – but definitely not male actors – naked.
After refusing to bare more than her breasts throughout her 30-year career, which included disrobing in films such as Against All Odds and After Dark My Sweet, the granddaughter of William Ward, 3rd Earl of Dudley now wishes she had appeared on screen fully nude.
“If you’re going to be an actress you can’t be coy,” says Rachel, 51, in an interview in Australia, where she lives with her actor husband Bryan Brown.
“Breasts are sexy. I want to see them and audiences want to see them. I’ve had to do my fair share of it. If you’re going to be an actress or a model it’s usually part of the package.”
Men don’t have to worry because their private parts don’t make pleasant viewing, she thinks. “We don’t want to see willies because they’re ugly,” asserts Rachel. “We want to see breasts because they’re beautiful.”
The actress never appeared fully nude on screen, adding that it was “a constant battle with directors” over taking her clothes off.
“I wish I had,” the mother of three admits. “I was just a prudish English girl. I wish I’d been less prudish.”
Rachel was speaking at the Sydney Film Festival before the premiere of her new film Beautiful Kate, which she wrote and directed.
The film, a mystery exploring adolescent sexuality, stars her husband and features a nude scene for co-star Maeve Dermody, 23.
Stripping off should not be an issue for actresses, insists Rachel. “You’re in a movie because you are appealing and because you represent the aspiration, the fantasy, the ideal.
“I resisted that but when you’re making a film one doesn’t have to take it all too seriously.
“We’re not curing cancer, it’s just entertainment!”
