At the age of 9, Abraham Lincoln witnesses his mother being killed by a vampire, Jack Barts. Some 10 years later, he unsuccessfully tries to eliminate Barts but in the process makes the acquaintance of Henry Sturgess who teaches him how to fight and what is required to kill a vampire. The quid pro quo is that Abe will kill only those vampires that Henry directs him to. Abe relocates to Springfield where he gets a job as a store clerk while he studies the law and kills vampires by night. He also meets and eventually marries the pretty Mary Todd. Many years later as President of the United States, he comes to realize that vampires are fighting with the Confederate forces. As a result he mounts his own campaign to defeat them.
This movie speculates that Abraham Lincoln as a child saw his mother killed by a man she stood up to. Years later Abe would find the man and try to kill him but for some reason he doesn't die. He tries to kill Abe but a man saves him and nurses Abe. When Abe awakens, the man, Henry Sturges, tells him that the man he was trying to kill is a vampire and he is a vampire hunter. Abe wants to learn how to kill them and Hanry teaches him and makes him an ax lined with silver, which is the weapon Abe prefers. Abe would then study law and move to Springfield to become a lawyer and to hunt vampires. He meets Mary Todd but Henry cautions him about relationships. Eventually Abe slays the vampire who killed his mother but before dying he tells Abe that Henry has not been honest with him. He confronts Henry, who doesn't deny it. Abe would come face to face with Adam, a vampire who plans to make the country his. Abe would give up hunting vampires, marry Mary and would continue his work as a lawyer and would become President. And when the Civil War breaks out, Abe learns that Adam is aiding the Confederacy and when it appears that they are close to winning, Abe must find a way to stop them.
I only went to this gastrointestinal challenge of a movie so I could comment.<br/><br/>Having watched Avatar, Prometheus and now this stinking pile of dross my concerns about western society, let alone movie making, are becoming serious.<br/><br/>I am a New Zealander who spent a lot of time in the USA and has done the rounds of Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg etc, and has a profound interest in the Civil War and its origins and outcomes. This is history, and maybe apart from an error of judgment or two at Gettysburg, the South may have carried the day, but they did not. Lincoln seized the moment to realign Union strategy with his famous speech.The rest is history.<br/><br/>What is this retarded nonsense about him being a vampire hunter? The vampire genre has been cooked to a cinder. There is only one vampire flick worth looking at, Dracula (?1993) with Gary Oldman, Anthony Hopkins, Keannu Reeves and Winnona Ryder, and even that is flawed but is close to the original Bram Stoker novel.<br/><br/>This movie is just putrid rubbish. If people want to watch such mindless escapism then let them do a pure work of ridiculous fiction like Austin Powers: Vampire Killer or Waynes Vampire World. Are we going to have Barack Obama: Secret Zombie, next? Goodness gracious.<br/><br/>And I won&#39;t go on about how Peter Jackson and NZ made Lord of the Rings, but hopefully we will through the Hobbit bring back true movie making to Wellywood.<br/><br/>As a postcript, I learned today from a cousin in Virginia some interesting information. He tells me 17 Turnbull&#39;s served with the CSA but another one (Major Thomas Turnbull) was in charge of the lead battery in the Union line that faced Picketts Charge at Gettysburg. His battery killed one cousin on the CSA side. I am told that this is the only known incident at Gettysburg of family killing family. He was forever outcast from the rest of the family. Makes me even more wild about this insult of a movie.
I had no expectations for this movie. I anticipated something fairly ridiculous. Much to my surprise, this has become one of my favorite movies. I give it a 10 out of 10. It has everything I want in a movie - appealing main characters, reasonably scary bad guys, a sexy good guy vamp,a good weaving of the supernatural elements into the historical backdrop. I love the action sequences, both on the Civil War battlefields and the scenes of Abe taking out vampires. I also loved the friendship and family moments. The only part that felt slightly over the top was the herd of horses battle sequence. I thought it went on a bit long and didn&#39;t seem that necessary to the movie. Everything else I loved! The movie manages to make the premise plausible without taking anything away from Abraham Lincoln&#39;s gravitas as a significant historical figure in American history.
The training montage where Lincoln learns to twirl his axe around his body like a baton for no apparent purpose is neither the movie's first laughable sequence nor its last, but it sums up the movie's aesthetic: The filmmakers mistakenly think nothing is silly if it's done with a grim enough facial expression.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is also a 2010 novel by American novelist Seth Grahame-Smith. The novel was adapted for the film by Smith and English-born American screenwriter Simon Kinberg. Angered to find that the train is carrying rocks, Adam goes after Abraham, screaming, &quot;Where&#39;s the silver?&quot; &quot;Right here,&quot; Abraham replies and plunges his fist, holding the silver pocket watch, into Adam&#39;s chest, destroying him. Abraham, Will, and Henry then escape from the train just before the burning trestle collapses. This time, when Henry asks, &quot;Where&#39;s the silver?&quot;, Abraham reveals that Mary and the freed slaves have transported it out of Washington through the Underground Railroad to Gettysburg where it&#39;s already being fashioned into bullets and bayonets to use against the vampire army. The scene then cuts to 19 November 1863, the day on which President Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address at the cemetery&#39;s dedication. This scene then cuts to 14 April 1865. Lincoln is making a few notes in his diary, while Mary admonishes him to hurry up or they will be late for the theater. Henry tries to convince him to be made immortal so that they can fight vampires through the ages side-by-side, but Lincoln turns him down. As Abraham and Mary&#39;s carriage pulls away, Lincoln says in a voice-over: History prefers legends to men. It prefers nobility to brutality, soaring speeches to quiet deeds. History remembers the battle and forgets the blood. However history remembers me, if it does at all, it shall only remember a fraction of the truth. In the final scene, which takes place in modern time, Henry Sturges is sitting in a bar next to an obviously drunk young man. Henry turns to him and says, &quot;A guy only gets that drunk when he wants to kiss a girl or kill a man. So which is it?&quot; He nudges the man and a gun falls to the floor. No. The last thing before the &quot;full credits&quot; is the drawing made with blood. There are many sites where Lincoln&#39;s Gettysburg Address can be read, but it&#39;s a short speech, easily presented here. Lincoln said: Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate—we can not consecrate—we can not hallow—this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.
