In the underbelly of the Parisian criminal world, the Police are frustrated by a gang committing a series of violent robberies. Leo Vrinks and Denis Klein are two cops seeking promotion, and the imminent departure of the Chief sets the scene for them to compete for the vacant throne. The competition between them becomes increasingly ruthless and blurs the usual lines of morality, until there seems no difference between the police and the criminals they chase. Vrinks, meeting with a source, becomes involved with a murder. Klein seizes the opportunity to up the ante and arranges for the arrest of Vrinks, but when he goes further and viciously involves Vrinks' wife, Camille, revenge is inevitable.
With &quot;36 Quai des Orfèvres&quot; french cinema probes one more time that has no reason to envy the Hollywood productions. It&#39;s still and great school of directors who want to make innermost movies, but also has the necessary means to create competitive product that may attract big audiences. <br/><br/>This is a dark and violent detective movie that deals with the mafia that rule the Parisian underworld and the corruption in the politic spheres. We got to of the biggest legends of Frenach cinema, Gerard Depardieu and Daniel Auteil, playing the main roles: Depardieu plays a corrupt cop that would do anything to be promoted, and Auteil is that man of principles that takes no bribes. Both of the are just great. The weaker point of the movie is the script, since it does not explain very clearly the relationship between the two main characters. Besides the plot becomes a little bit confusing at the end. <br/><br/>Anyway it&#39;s a good film in its genre and it&#39;s way above the average works that Hollywood exports. <br/><br/>*My rate: 6.5/10
This is a fantastic French cop thriller from director Olivier Marchal. Leo Vrinks (Daniel Auteuil) and Denis Klein (Gerard Depardieu) are rival heads of two police units in Paris. Together, they are assigned the case involving a series of violent armed car robberies. Both detectives are in line for a promotion so it becomes a dog eat dog scenario as they each try to solve the case through questionable means.<br/><br/>For the most part, this is a realistic cop thriller. Marchal, a former police officer, delivers a film that deals with lots of grays in the world of cops fighting not only criminals but each other. There are a few bits where it becomes a &quot;film&quot; where things happen that only happen in films. Regardless, the acting is top-notch. Auteuil is the somber cop and Depardieu, surprise, is perfect as the mean cop. Valeria (RAIN MAIN) Golino shows up as Auteuil&#39;s wife. Watching this, I immediately thought, &quot;Why hasn&#39;t this been announced for a US remake?&quot; It is INFERNAL AFFAIRS-levels of good that Hollywood would jump over. Sure enough, I wasn&#39;t disappointed when I checked the IMDb as the remake is slated for 2008.
